If you care to take the time to watch this ten minute video clip I swear it's like a short Thomas Covenant movie, or a least a Ramen story. You'll see Ranyhyn, Kevin's Watch, Gilden trees, Skywier, The Spoiled Plains, The Haruchai's crashed spaceship  , and Manhome.

Oh, my. I had the record, Olias of Sunhillow, by Jon Andersen (lead singer of the group Yes) about a million years ago. Cool. My vote still goes to William Fichtner, who deserves a major motion picture imho.

Ordinarily I'd say he's a bit pretty for TC, but he looks relatively rugged there.

Too bad he's old now but a younger Jurgen Prochnow would be great as TC.
I think Ed Harris would make a great Mhoram, he has those compelling eyes!

who to play

Post by FireCat »

I think Jeremy Irons would be a great Thomas Covenant, he has the look , but more than that he could carry the whole personalty. I don't think Sutherland has the depth. Though I do like Sutherland.

The wounded heart sunk within the depth of God sings

It rises from the pond alive

As if new-born.

I believe in my heart that what I wring from myself

To tinge life’s canvas

With red of pallid hue, thus cloaking it

In luminous garb.

That could work. He's my ideal pick to play Warden, basically the Mhoram of the Gap cycle.

As a newbie here I vote for Harrison Ford as TC. He can pretty much use his role as Indiana Jones as a model of sorts, however he might object to having two fingers of his right hand cut off. 8O

I'd like to see Jon Anderson or Chris Squire play TC. They may not act well, I don't know, but if Jon broke into song now and again and Chris started playing his Rickenbacker, heck! I'd go see the movie.

Maybe 30 years ago. Remember, TC's in his mid 20s for the first book.

First of all, holy crap, having lovejoy play covenant seems somewhat wrong.

For Covenant I actually think Johnny Depp. My reasons are as follows:

1. Covenant is around 30 in the first chronicles and 40 in the second chronicles. Johnny Depp can pass for both, with make up he could look gaunt enough.

2. He has one of the best ranges of any actor in the world today. He could really do the role justice as he did with sweeny todd (except for the fact that he seemed to use the same voice for him as he did jack sparrow).

3. When Covenant goes mad occasionally depp has proved that he can play a man losing his mind. (see secret window)

Don't know if anyone will agree but that's my pick.

Agreed; while I didn't think it was a great movie, I really enjoyed both Depp and Turturro in that film.

I have been over a list in my head and when push comes to shove....Hugh Laurie comes to mind every time. I don't know why.

Mel Gibson is also good at that whole tormented and fervently committed persona...but he would have to get really thin again.

Hugh Jackman would be a good Lord Mhoram....he just has the eyes for it.

Brendon Frazier is a good candidate for Saltheart Foamfollower...he is such a solid presence on the screen.

It's a shame this project has been shelved....I think they underestimate the power of a good fantasy project. Would be better than some of the mindless drivel which Hollywood is throwing at us right now.

It's hilarious how differently people are able to picture TC in their mind's eyes despite reading from the same books. I'm chuckling at some of the choices here, because they're so far away from how I see him, but they're all valid - it's great that everyone sees things differently.

I have to agree with everyone who has suggested Hugh Laurie so far. He's simply perfect for the role at the moment. The only other one who comes close for me is Christian Bale, but only as he looked in "The Machinist." He's a bit too muscular these days, and isn't doing his best work either.

Some would say that Hugh Laurie is too old for the first part of the series. I disagree. He is a consummate actor who can appear older or younger as needed (see Stuart Little) His scruffy persona for House is the exact ingredient for which to pull off the wild, prophetic paradox which is Thomas Covenant. I've never pictured Thomas Covenant as overly good-looking...I feel his personality is what draws you to him. Which is why any pretty boy would be out of the question. And Hugh Laurie is sinewy instead of muscular which is also a must.

Oh jeez, my son thinks Jim Carrey would be a good Foamfollower. (Don't worry, I'll ground him...)

Actually, I still think the best Covenant would be Russell Crowe, but Hugh Laurie is definitely number two for me.
