JJ Abrams in the directors chair is a good thing indeed.

Affleck as Kirk...I highly doubt that Abrams would do such a thing. In order to get the franchise back on itsfeet, the last thing they would do is piss off the fan base... a fan base they'll need to see the movie once or twice to make it a success.

My guess is that they'll opt for a relative unknown, or at least someone fairly low profile. I could see affleck as an Academy advisor or some such a thing, but not JTK. It just doesn't make sense.

I quite agree. Actually from what I've read I believe Matt Damon is a more likely choice for Kirk than Affleck but in any case I would prefer an unknown as well.

Could be worse. Spock could ask Kirk to 'tell him how to quit him' in the flick.....

Agreed. Damon as Kirk could be better, but even so...They might want a younger man than Damon. The other thing they need is for someone to play Kirk stright and not campy. I doubt that JJA would settle for that...

I'm just disappointed that this project is still going forward at all.

I don't have any desire to see Kirk and Spock, the early years. I don't want the Star Trek continuity further challenged like it was in Enterprise. I think Star Trek is finished, and I want to remember it how it was.

I couldn't agree more. I don't want a reboot, or a new series.

Let it die with dignity.

I'm a Star Trek fan and I'm always interested in seeing something new. I didn't want the idea for the next film to be anything that might be compared with the abomination that was Enterprise but here we are in prequel territory again. The only difference I see between what was attempted with the last series and what they appear to be shooting for with ST-11 seems to be an adherance to established canon instead of trampling everything we Trek fans held dear the way the Enterprise writers did. J.J. Abrams could generate a story and a big screen spectacle that might restore our faith in Trek the way Spiderman and X-men did with comic book films after the disasterous Superman IV and Batman and Robin. My hope would be that a successful film would inspire a return to series television with something at least as respectable as STNG. But then again I'm a fan that has watched almost every episode of Trek (except for most of Enterprise). I admit I have a very strong bias toward optimism. Time will tell.

Enterprise was simply boring. I kinda liked their take on the Tholians, but feh.
