Darkwood--Into the blackness....

Curious to see the pentacle Katrina described, and trusting to Led to handle any traps or foes which may appear, Laurel moves as silently as she can after him to study the door as well.

"hmm..."
The bard studies the door quietly, then makes her way back to the group, hoping Led either follows her back or is able to hear her from where he is at.
"The door is a backup outer perimeter type of ward, built to keep something inside. That something is neither an Evil nor a Good Outsider though, so it is most likely something from the Elemental Plane of Water, based on Skyseeker's theory of what is going on, the smell of brine, and the splashes which are easily discerned.
"I can't tell who or how recently this was put up, a shame we don't have a dwarf with us. So I do not know if it was erected by the elves who built this place, or by the Protector's people after they claimed it."
Turning to Vynarkus, she continues, "The door is a ward to keep something inside, but we merely need to open the door to go in. The plane of water tends to be ruled by Marid, water elemental genies. Like most of genie-kind, they take poorly to being enslaved and/or imprisoned. But they are also a very proud race. They would take exception to us implying we freed them, instead of them getting out on their own.
"I will assist you with introducing ourselves to it, if Marid it be." [ooc]Diplomacy assist another, please[/ooc] "It should be grateful to us for releasing it, but we must not say anything along the lines of, 'We released you.' Well worded flattery should go far; especially if we implied we merely helped by speeding up the inevitable a little bit."
Looking around at the party, Laurel hesitates at being so bold to suggest such an action. "Is everyone agreed this is a course we should take? I believe Vynarkus may have the best chance at negotiation with whatever may be behind this door, and since we have already heard a voice, my own guess is that it is intelligent and most likely a Marid."

Marrik shrugs, "I have no knowledge of "Marids".....I know precious little of genies, beyond that each element has a different one."
Skyseeker nods thoughtfully, "We dealt little with the genies of water and fire back home, mostly the Djinn and Dao, those of Air and Earth. Negotiation and respect, or more accurately flattery, do work well. I think you have marked a wise path, lady singer."

Led holds up his hand. "Wait."
"Consider how Laurel and I were effected by looking at the first shrine. If there is a shrine like that in there, your Marid has been locked in the room for some time. It may not be entirely rational, when it comes to being flattered or rescued. Take caution."
"But, a good way of flattering the thing, if it's sane enough to be flattered, is to say that we heard of it's imprisonment. We snuck in just to release it, because it's the only thing that can defeat the Protector. We're no match for the Protector's might, but we were able to at least sneak in past the guy long enough to open the door. In fact, the entire elven nation is only able to temporarily limit the Protector's power... the whole elven people urgently need the help of this most puissant Marid. Blah blah blah."
"Also, the door isn't locked, but it's set up to swing closed again shortly after being opened. And while opened, it's dripping iron filings down upon the opening, to keep the Marid inside. Give me a little bit to break that part, and we should be able to escort our honored guest out in style."

Geek the mage, first.
"It's a prisoner of a Bad Man. So it was probably a good genie at one point. But maybe the Bad shrine in there has hurt the genie so much that he's Bad now. We'll have to find out when we get inside."
He thinks a bit more. "Actually, that wasn't exactly right. 'Trina, have you ever seen a horse who's got burrs under its saddle?"
He thinks a bit more. "Actually, that wasn't exactly right. 'Trina, have you ever seen a horse who's got burrs under its saddle?"
Geek the mage, first.
"Hrm. Okay, well... sometimes, a burr will get stuck under a horse's saddle. A burr is a little plant, with sharp spikeys on it. But horses don't have hands, so they can't really reach back under the saddle to dig the burr out. And then there's some human sitting on the saddle, pushing the burr in deeper. So, after a little while, the horse is hurting pretty good, and he's trying to make the pain stop. But all the human knows is that the horse is acting all wild."
"And the horse is still dangerous. He could hurt, or even kill people. But it's not his fault he's a Bad horse. And it would only take you or me something really easy, like lifting up the saddle and taking the burr out, and the the horse will be Good again."
"But sometimes, there's something else wrong. And the Good horse gets bitten by a Bad animal... and then the horse gets sick, and turns Bad. You can't fix that. All you can do is Deal with the horse, so it won't hurt anybody else. And then go Deal with the animal that bit the horse, so IT doesn't make anybody else sick. Then burn the bodies, 'cause they'll make you sick if you eat them."
"So, sometimes, when there's a horse that might be Bad, there's way you can fix it, instead of Dealing with it. But sometimes there's not. You're just lucky you have someone like the Good Man around to tell you for sure if someone is a Bad Man or just a sick person who could get better."
"These shrines, they can make people sick, if the people look at them. And if the people get sick enough, they might start hurting other people. They'd become Bad people. Now, we don't know if this is sick like a burr, or sick like a bite. Maybe, we can take the sick people and take them away from the shrines, and they'll get better. I got a little sick at the first shrine, and I'm better now. But maybe if you get sick enough, you won't get better."
"What I mean by this is that the Marid that's in there... maybe he's sick already. And maybe he's so sick that he'll never get better. If your Good Man were here, he could tell us if the Marid is Good or Bad. But we might not know right away. But, if you have to Deal with the Marid, just remember that he didn't WANT to be Bad. Something made him sick, so sick that he turned Bad. So be nice to the Good Marid that used to be in there, and Deal with him quickly. If you have to Deal with him at all. Like you did with that Fire Giant."
As he's chatting away, Led is busy fiddling with the spring mechanism on the door, and trying to cover up the vents where the iron filings would come out.

Anna considers the shapeshifter's and bard's words, and nods in agreement. "I will leave the diplomacy to those more suited for it and will stay here and only act if the Djinn turns violent" With that, she saunters up to the lovely healer, trying very subtly to place herself between any danger that might arise, but not in an obvious way as to imply that Sigrid can't take care of herself. She then wonders if she's starting to overthink things, and sits on the floor and brings out her cloths to polish her flail while the others decide on how best to deal (no capital letter) with the Djinn.

"Hmmm...
"Well, if people are willing to let me try talking this time, I guess I'd better prepare for doing so..."
He fades back into view, floating above ground a few feet behind Led.
"Now let's see if we can get any useful information first. Marrik, can you try seeing if there is anything evil beyoung this door? I'm pretty sure one of those shrines would be obvious if there."

The bard whistles slowly as she considers Marrik's answer. "Are you able to tell if the evil beyond is sentient or not? Is the creature or creatures within evil, or is the evil emanating from an altar or something similar?"
Turning to address Kalindriel, she continues, "I truly have no idea what it is you have been able to do to the altars we have already encountered to destroy them, but is that something you can do sight unseen before we open the door?"
