301 pages of Noobs (and counting!)

OK, so with 300 pages of Noob welcomes here, I will introduce myself.
DoctorGamgee is the name, though Dr.G or Doc is fine. Or dude, buddy, etc. I am the youngest of 5 kids, so basically will answer to anything.
I moderate the remnants of the Lord of the Rings fanclub board now that Decipher is no longer involved, and am a fan of SRD. In reality I am an Opera Singer, professor of voice, and a dad of two darling children who likes to grow things in the backyard that will feed me. Figs and Limes are in season at the moment, but Pomegranates are on the way, and Bananas will be here by next year.
The board is sprawling, but I only found it today, so will have to take time to get to know it (and you!) in order to really discuss things. Hopefully, somewhere I will get a projected release date for the final book...I'm on p.498 of AATE, and had thought it would be the end...both good and bad that there is more to come. I bought each book when it came out and now find that I have to wait yet again...sigh.
But, it was a long time coming, and I greatly appreciated SRD's WHAT HAS GONE BEFORE segment, as I had always had a hard time summing up what the book was about and his insights helped me to see some of the deeper things I had missed.
OK..enough about me, or we'll have a page that takes 30 years to load.
Howdy, y'all.

Hail DoctorGamgee!
Welcome to the Watch!
The more official welcomers and moderators will be along in due course.
I am glad to be the first to welcome you and I hope you enjoy your time here. As you have seen it is extensive and just about anything you can think of is discussed (once the vital SRD stuff has been covered, of course

). Folk here are generally very civil and good humoured (with a couple of notable exceptions, you know who you are!).
Feel free to start new threads or bump old ones. People generally have something to say no matter what the topic. Plenty of LOTR fans here as well (myself included).
I hope to talk to you on the threads.
Be Wecome and True!
u.

And welcome.

Welcome.
Have a few opera singers in my family. An eclectic bunch to say the least.

Welcome Dr. G, always nice to see new faces. AATE Forum is hidden so people don't accidentally wander in and runa cross spoilers, but, if you PM Orlion or another mod, they can hook you up with access to it.

Thank you all for the kind welcomes. And Vraith for the date of the next book. After having survived the Captal's Tower debacle by Rawn...the support group says we need to forgive...still.....
I will PM Orlion once I have finished the book, Sindatur. I have about 50 pages left, so should you venture over there, I'm sure I will have comments.
I figured out the "Thank" button and count, (so while I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, I am not a spoon!) so I'm sure at some point the whole White Gold Dollar thing will become meaningful...
Much to learn and see. Thanks again, one and all, for the lovely welcome.

Be Welcome to the Watch, Doc.
Be Well Come and True.
You may wish to check out the
Dissecting the Land forum, if you are interested in "deeper things" you may have missed on your own. Our fellow Watchers are a very insightful group!
Also, feel free to volunteer to dissect a chapter of
AATE, as that dissection is currently ongoing.

Welcome to the Watch Doc.
Plenty to see and do and talk about. There's even a Tolkein forum.
The WGD are payment for posts, there's a store link under the banner at the top, where you can buy the little items you see under people's details on the left of their posts with them.
Have fun.

I thought my link explained it *sigh*
To a person of my generation and upbringing, 'dm' (effael
dm) means but one thing - 'doctor martens', the boots pictured. Initially a working boot, they were then appropriated -briefly, thankfully- as a symbol for skinheads (extreme right wing), and they were then adopted by a generation of counterculturists until their popularity led to an inevitable downturn in quality and durability. I've persisted with them though. I love my Docs!
which brings me nicely to - hi DoctorGamgee! I've already said hello elsewhere..

Wow this board is dense in material. One is somewhat flummoxed at times. But everyone I have met has been kind, so that is a plus.
I am curious: according to the AATE "how to" thread (which is locked, so thus questions related to that subject must go somewhere...why LOOK, here's somewhere...) there are two groups to join. Are they separate by Group Members? Did I join the wrong one? Are all my friends in the OTHER Group? How will I know I have not made the wrong choice (if indeed the choice exists) and can I correct it?
Perhaps the Elohim know...I do not...
Do I hear bells?

The two groups depends on which mod will open the forum for you. The worst that'll happen is you might have to wait a few days before you start to see the forum.

So to speed things along, do you suggest I join both? Is that Legal?

Welcome to the Watch, Dr.G
And, if I'm not mistaken, the two AATE groups are just to allow two moderators to give access.
Edit: oh, already answered, sorry, I'm slow. As for two groups - not sure about allowed or not, but that's not likely to be needed, from what I know, access is usally given very fast.
Stonemaybe, guessing a meaning a combination of two letters may be is tricky thing, especially if it is torn out of something, some for dm: decimetre, or decimeter, diagonal metho - a mathematical proof of the uncountability of real numbers, Dichroic mirror - a mirror with different transmittance or reflectance at two different wavelengths, dispersion measure - the amount of dispersion of radio waves by interstellar medium, difference due to Memory - an event related potential differentiating between later remembered versus forgotten items, Doctor of Management, Doctorate in Medicine, Doctor of Music, Data mining, Deathmatch

and Death metal

I am still reading
AATE, so I have not joined the
AATE forum. But my understanding is that both "groups" will take you to the same forum, so I don't really think there is an advantage to joining one over the other.
What you might do is send both Seareach and dlbpharmd (the two mods of the
AATE forum) PMs asking one or the other to give you access. That might speed things along a little bit.
And definitely, the Watch covers just about everything topic wise. Should one ever burn out on discussing SRD (not that that is likely to happen), there are plenty of other topics to keep one an active member.
*~*edit~*~
I see Eff beat me in the information about the two groups.
Thanks Eff!

Here in the States, it is a D.M.A -- Doctor of Musical Arts (or Don't Mean Anything). At least that's what it says on my diploma. I think they decided to make sure of that as they realized I had a B.M. (Bachelor of Music, not a ... well, I suppose I have had those too, but one doesn't commemorate each one in Sheep-Skin on the wall!). Basically I have three pieces of paper that say, "Yup, he can sing, thanks for asking!" Sadly, I received no compensation for my face appearing in the center above...
Am slowly learning my way around...
Thanks for the help!

Links? Bloody rare for me to click links.

And I still wouldn't have gotten it, because I "pronounce" it all as one word.

So I would never have focused on just the DM part of it.
(I know what docs are btw.

I've worn them for years.

I still wear a 16 yr old pair I have that are "biker" style. The style went out of production years ago it seems, and I can't replace them.)

Hello

So it was recommended in the other thread to say "hello" and spill how I was exposed to chronicles.
HELLO!
I'm 41 now, from my recollection I was probably about 14 when I read them (1984), so I did not read them when they came out. My mother was dating a guy after my father had died in 1982. He had this MASSIVE collection of books in his study many of which are pretty hard to find even today, Many of which are not out of print (try finding the first 100 copies of "Perry Rhodan"!).
Anyhow I stumbled across Lord Foul's bane. Awesome read but REALLY hard to get through the first 50 or so pages, after which I was hooked.
