Welcome, Doug0915. I am fairly new to this forum, but have found the folks to be quite friendly.

I read them about the same time you did, on the recommendation of my friend. And I agree with your assessment. Thank heavens for that 51st page...

Welcome Doug.

It took me two goes and a six month break to get through those first 50.

Welcome Doug.

Yea, I put it down twice. Wasn't until the 3rd attempt I was able to get past the rape scene, but, it was all good from then on. Covenant in the real world wasn't a problem for me at all, though

:welcome: Welcome to the Watch, Doug0915 :bestwishes:

I'm not sure how old I was, must have been less then 12, likely somewhere around 10. It was the first time I tried to read a book that way - starting it, and then starting all over again after a large part of it to get better into what was there.

Welcome to the Watch Doug.

Everybody else, sheesh, it's not like it was graphically violent or anything. I never had a single problem with it. Didn't have a problem with The Real Story either.

They're stories...nothing in them is actually happening...it's deliberately chosen in order to elicit certain responses, create certain views/expectations/whatever.

It wasn't the rape that had me struggling. I just failed to get into the story the first couple of attempts. The first time I read up to meeting Foamfollower was when I was hooked. :D

Hi Doug, welcome!

I think it's just the RL bit that's tough to get past. Once you're in The Land...

Av, "Everybody else"? I said "after a large part", or do you consider barely starting the book - to the rape scene - fits?

Hard to say why I started all over, it was more like I felt so. It was like I couldn't get to feel myself inside, and somewhy wanted to. At least a large part of that was the translation - I've even made a topic on that, so that whoever interested can see a few "nice" samples. kevinswatch.ihugny.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=21035 Cerainly, it had upsides as well, foremostly that it is motivating to read the original.

What is really unusual - that I was so determined to get in and understand, that I started from the beginning again, if my memory doesn't fail me seriously, I haven't done a thing like that with any other book - like I needed to fine-tune to ignore the mess of a translation and not to choke on the amount of details as well, to feel what was important.

"Everybody else" who really struggled to get past the rape scene in LFB. (And there's a surprising number of them.)

It's not whether it fits or not...I agree it was pretty unexpected, it's just that it seemed to bother people a lot.

But I think SRD is good at that...making us dislike the people we would usually feel sorry for, and pity the people we would usually hate.

Welcome Doug!

The main problem I had at the start was investing in Covenant when he gave me the sh!ts. But once I got over that, the rest is history. And I've actually become hooked on Donaldson's flawed characters (which is fortunate, because there aren't many without major flaws!)

I feel like I haven't seen you around for ages StevieG. But I see you've been posting fairly regularly recently. (Except that month between May and July.)

Nevermind.

Carry on.

Hey Av :)

I had a period where real life was just too bloody busy to do anything else. It's still busy, but it's also nice to get back on this forum.

I'm looking forward to your TFS chapter on The Hangar, Stevie! No pressure, though. Family and real life comes first.
