Terry Brooks.
Ok. :D First off, he's dead, so past tense is probably appropriate. :D Secnd I quite liked him. Great world building anyway. Yes, he lost his way terribly about half-way through, and wandered aimlessly for several thousand pages (culminating in the horror that was book 10).

But he found it again in book 11, just before he died, and the series was competently finished by Sanderson. Personally, I think it's worth the read.

Definitely better than Terry Brooks. :D

Are any of our referrals besides me currently active?

What about a prize for creating threads that go for more than one page?
(We could quibble over the details of Tank threads versus non-Tank threads later)

Batty and Magickmaker talked exuberantly about the Watch and meeting Watchers.
I read it on an SRD-themed group on LiveJournal, and decided to come participate.

I have, and I'm sick and tired of you oppressing people and keeping them poor! It's an outrage, I say! An outrage! ;)

Hey now. I'm only keeping *some* of them poor. The pie's always growing, don't ya know. ;)

Ah, but you only read it because you were already looking for SRD related stuff. ;)

"You only read it because you were already looking for SRD related stuff" may be setting the bar too high. If the only referrals we acknowledge as such are people who came to the Watch due to being led here by someone, and the common bond is not SRD, what is the draw?

Sure we have other vibrant fora... but the only instance that comes to mind of a forum drawing numerous outsiders who had no real interest in SRD was Gravin Threndor about five years ago...and we know how that turned out. We had some pretty interesting RPGs going for a while, stuff that transcended the usual battle-based stereotypes. Then an original prolific game author pretty much vanished, a few other notable gamemasters let their games go fallow...and one gamemaster who had brought many other players to the Watch moved all his games off the Watch and onto some other platform.

Gravin Threndor has been a dark lonely cave since then. Some still celebrate its name...but they are holding onto old glories. It just ain't what it used to be!

* Poster with most posts between now and 1 million
* Poster with most improved posting rate between now and 1 million
* Poster that puts us over the top (to be decided some way that's not too difficult for the admins)

Any others? And what shall the prizes be?
If we're going to punt for 1000000 posts we'd better kick this competition off!

How about prizes each month for the person who posts the most (only one per person. Previous winners excluded.) and the person who pushes us over 4000 (we're going to need at least that to reach the target). (An extra special prize if we manage to ever break 5000.)

We could also have a ranking system, so that as a person's post count grows they can put their new rank in their Title:
  • > 100 posts - MsPam

    > 200 posts - Savor Posts

    > 500 posts - Postasorus

    > 1000 posts - Ghurning

    > 5000 posts - Power of Null

    > 10,000 posts - Avatarizing the Poschtcountathon

Yup, apparently!

Ooh, look... it's ussussumiel from Marketing!
The incentive program with the ranking system sounds fun to talk about, but I'm thinking I wouldn't want to give up my precious ranking!
Were you thinking "Postasorus" for a person who's gotten 500 posts since contest start, or a 500-posts-total newbie?

I have appreciated hearing about your research (both internal and external), u!
Sometimes I think a good project for us would be to go back and read old threads the way you have at times, and see what we notice.

Postasorus still sounds like a dinosaur. I suppose that's appropriate. All those kids with their tweetering and phones that do Windows. I'll be in my cave if anyone needs me.

You misunderstand me. :D I meant that self-selection was still in effect. Different from bringing in people who haven't read the Chrons.

If this is going to happen someone is going to have to start the thread. I nominate Sorus to run the competition, since she suggested the idea in the first place ;)

I'll contribute to the prize fund and help out with monitoring etc. (as well as posting as much as I can!)
