Keeping my fingers crossed for you, Sea. :) And get well soon, dammit!

I went to a planning meeting for the backpacking trip last night, at which we received a map of the route. Just prior to the meeting, I spent a half-hour on the treadmill with a loaded backpack. I am happy to report that if I survive the first three hours of the hike on Saturday, chances are excellent that I will live through the weekend.

So BOO!!! to this week! :P
Crap and crap. Carla has a chest infection too that is sticking with her longer than it should. She can't sleep at night for all the coughing. Must be the swine flu.

Could be, it was originally a respitory infection of sorts in pigs (though of course, we hope it's not, just keep an eye on it, both of you)

Get well, Cag, Carla and Sea! I've been under the weather myself - sore throat, stuffed sinus. Just the common cold, I think.

Matrixman, you're sick too? That's it, new rule: no Watchers can get sick until this swine flu scare blows over.

Puzzled by billions. Apprently the short scale billion (1000,000,000) has been in official use in the UK for some time. I was raised with the long scale billion (1000,000,000,000). Short scale makes no sense. :?

Gosh! That's the last thing she needs at the moment (ie: a cold...not the swine flu...since I *doubt* she has that!).

Well, Carla has no fever - just chest congestion. But yeah, Carla's been saying how that's the last thing she needs right now. She's been wanting the baby to hurry up and come out, and now she is telling him to wait until she gets well.

I was raised with the short scale billion, and first heard about the long scale billion less than a year ago. To me, a million is a thousand thousands and a billion is a thousand millions. I guess to you a billion is a million millions?

To all who are feeling under the weather, get well soon!

This evening my orchestra group (really just a small string ensemble with a couple of flutes and some drums) did a gig at an art gallery opening. We were short our drummer, and some of our favorite songs to play at these gigs really need a drum (or at least a strong supporting beat). We tried to play them anyway, with varying amounts of success. I think that overall we still sounded okay, but we would have been a LOT better with the drums. We must have sounded really good to the other people there, because at the end, when we started clearing out our stuff, the husband of one of the featured artists came up to us and said he wanted to give us a tip. He handed me a pile of cash--$140. There were 7 of us, and we each got $20! Because we are there as part of a class, we usually don't get anything for playing (maybe the occasional piece of chocolate or a thank you note, but not money). $20 is a lot of money to me (probably because money is not something I usually have in abundance). I am stunned and grateful.

Yes, a billion is a million millions to me. Apparently we switched to short scale in the 70s, before I was born, but my family and schools always used long scale. Long scale makes more sense if you look at the meaning of the word 'billion' (a million to the power of two). Oh well. I'll just have to remain confused.

So your billion is my trillion. I never knew there was a difference in meanings for the word.

 Yes, and my trillion is a million to the power of three, i.e. a million billions, or 1,000,000,000,000,000,000. 8O

That's awesome. . . I remember how any windfall was appreciated back when I was in college. :D

Hope all who are sick get well soon! |G

As for me, the fiance and I had our first fight yesterday. It was over (of all things) candles for the wedding. I suspect it's really more about stress than anything. Anyhow, apologies were made and we had a heart to heart about stuff. And now all is well. *cue sappy disney-esque music*

Glad all is well between you two, Lyr! (But I do wonder how often weddings are derailed by stressed out participants.)

Still not well myself. Thought I would have recovered by this time, but today I've been sneezing a lot. Bah.

Feeling traumatized. After three years in Nigeria I feel I am only beginning to realize the evil that is at work here. And that there is absolutely nothing that I can do against it except with the little handful of children that I am charged with educating each day. Doesn't seem like much when you see the scale of corruption and suffering here and know that there are people with the power to do something to lift Nigeria out of the sewer, but their only interest is in lining their own Swiss bank accounts.

Meh...back at work after almost 2 weeks off. Same old, same old. My trip to New York was excellent, though! (first time) :D
