fell at work today. I was in the knife room and somehow tripped, then tried to grab the unstable podium. I tumbled backwards, striking my head against a metal cage.

lying on the ground bleeding, I first located my glasses, then got up stumbled into the kitchen where the inmates stood in horror. the blood was flowing from the back of my head and because of my uniform, pooling at the front of my shirt. my hand was also covered in blood, from reaching back to confirm I was bleeding. I could feel the warmth of the blood pooling at my neck.

they inmates got me a chair and a wet towel, as I called in for an emergency response on my radio. the building showed up with a full compliment of officers. they had to call for medical. I thought I had called for the medical response, but may have failed to key my radio for that part.

went to medical, they bandaged me up, took my statement. I was by myself since my C/O called in. so I had locked up two (out four) sets of keys. made sure someone collected the tools, as the inmates were sent to their cells. even bleeding out I retained correctional awareness.

I was then taken to the hospital by state van, and spent the next five or so hours their. the did bloodwork, cat scan, x-rays. gave me an IV, gave me pain meds in that IV and found out I did not need staples or stitches. I lucked out in that regard. but I ended up with a concussion.

my head hurts at the point of impact, I have a raging headache. I just showered after sleeping all day. had to wash out all the dried blood.

I'll miss inservice this week. so no shooting this week. I'll have to see a doctor that the state mandates. and likely I should drug tested.

but I saw the Saints win already and the Red Sox are winning right now.

I could have really managed to hurt myself, but escaped that. so any day standing upright is good, eh?

saw the state mandated doctor today. he was ready to send me back to work tomorrow. I said no, I was still experiences headaches and needed two days more, which brings me to my normal days off.

well even Julie could tell he was annoyed with me. signed off on the days, scheduled me a follow up on Wednesday and gave me a scrip for the headaches.

Julie says I have the doctor/patient relationship backwards. the doctor is supposed to tell me what i'm doing, not me telling him what I will be doing.

and I have an annoying habit of basically prescribing my own meds. but I figure I know me better than the doctor and why shouldn't I ask for what I want? lol

a thing that annoys me - workman's comp covers my medical expenses - but I have to supply the 35 hours or so that I will miss.

taping Blade Trinity mostly so I can watch Patton Oswalt's fine performance.

and the drug the doc prescribed? not made anymore so I have to wait til tomorrow while Wal-Mart calls and gets him to re-prescribe something. right now zoning on stuff for my back.

Maybe both you and the doctor have it backwards!! I thought doctors were supposed to be overprotective, giving people too many days off, and then the patient is like, "a week? I'm going back in to work after 2 more days!"

If you filed for WC you can get the hours back. When you put in your time and leave there should be categories such as annual leave, holiday comp, sick leave. There should also be WC. You put it through that bank and although they take your time now, they are REQUIRED to return it to your bank or give you cash value. There will be some option on your wc claim forms that ask you whether you want to wait for a comp check or take it from your leave bank and get it reimbursed. If you have the time accumulated I suggest taking it from your time as waiting for the money is a long process. Also it should pay all your meds etc. First thing you do is notify, in writing to your office that you are filing for WC. They have 48 hours to give you a claim# which is what you put in the memo area of your time and leave. DO NOT PUT IT IN AS SICK LEAVE. Once you have a claim#, go to the pharmacy. My suggestion is a large pharmacy. Ask them if they take workmans comp. If they say yes, you give them your claim info. They will call the WC board to open an account. This usually takes about 24 hours. Use that pharmacy and there is no cost to you at all. I suggest you use Walmart pharmacy. Up here they take WC and it is pretty quick. I also know CVS, Rite Aide and Walgreens take it. Call your personnel office or better yet email. Ask who is the liaison for WC. Tell them you need a claim # asap.

Lastly I would suggest you find a doctor that specializes in workman's comp. They will write you out for as long as you want to take time off. So if you want to take a month, they will back you up. Only thing is you need to have that sicktime or annual time saved or be prepared to wait for the claim money.

Scary meeting scheduled in about 15 minutes now. We'll see if I'm still employed after.
