A nascent feeling of dread crept up Bob's spine as a branch snapped somewhere deep in the forest. In a horror movie, the music would have just reached a crescendo. There was something hidden in the gloaming, and now it was following him.

A sudden crash when the nameless stalking nocturnal peril made a leap for him jolted him awake - into a present that was even worse.
He could hear the steel-toned voice of his wife downstairs as she sought an advantage against her invincible adversary - a guest of no mean prestige.
"Would you like more crumpets, perhaps?"

He felt a tremendous sense of relief - it had all been a dream. The tedious repetition of the past week must have caught up with him. He caught sight of their unexpected guest, and his vision seemed to coruscate.

He wished he'd taken the time to put on a new shirt; this one was raveling at the cuffs. "I expected him to be more punctual," their guest complained. She turned her venomous gaze upon him, and he nearly regurgitated his crumpets.

And then his eyes caught sight of the ornate earrings which bookended her face. They had been his mother's, and only flawless tactics and a stubborn disregard for fair play could have yielded them up to the woman who stood arrayed before him. This was too much - it was like an ambush.

It seemed that a night in the hospital required an infinity of instances where somebody wakes you up for blood draws: at least this gal had a sense of humor.

When the craft didn't answer after an hour, it was a red flag to Sonya that something had gone wrong.
She hoped that this didn't mean the ship was now reduced to detritus on some jagged reef.
But she had to think positively, as it was time to hone her skills at directing a search-and-rescue mission.
