Excession was damn good, but my favourite is probably The Player of Games. You might like that one Fist. AADG that I mention above is not a Culture book, but you might like that one too.

(C'mon, it has solipsist mercenaries who wear psychedelic camouflage, and a Lazy Gun. It's awesome.)

I like Nights Dawn, barring a few very very annoying points.

Yes! The Abhorsen trilogy is great. He builds a really interesting fantasy world with some twists that are somewhat different than I've seen in other fantasies. Fun stuff.

He has some other good books and series, too.

I'll second the recommendation. I'll have to read Guy Gavriel Kay one of these days. One of my old coworkers was really into his work, and we have similar taste in books.

I've read one of his books. It took me 10 years to get through the first 100 pages. Once I managed that, the rest of the book was really great. I ended up being sorry it was a stand-alone. The beginning really sucked though. (It was Tigana if anybody cares. )

Finished the Sothern Reach trilogy a while back. I never warmed to it. Thought I was going to for a while on the second book, but the last one left me disappointed. It's good writing, especially if you like new weird, but the actual plot was just far too scant for me.

On the other end of the spectrum, I just finished Anthony Ryan's Blood Song. Quite possibly the worst written book I have ever enjoyed. I'd say it is to The Book of the New Sun what Shanarra was to LOTR. The editing was especially bad, but I cut it some slack for being self published.

Patricia McKillip's Wonders of the Invisible World. Short stories.

Just started Game of Thrones. We'll see if I get farther in this than I did in Malazan...

You should be able to, Menolly. The plot is a lot easier to follow, plus the kids are cute. Or at least, they are at the start.

Anyhoo, I finally finished Robert Jackson Bennett's City of Stairs last, um, Thursday, I think? It got very good by the end, I recommend it.
