A WFC freebie: The Drag Queen of Elfland by Lawrence Schimel. Short stories. I read a few of them, dipping in and out, and then put the book aside.

I'm now into Night Pilgrims by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, which I actually paid money for at WFC, so I could get her to sign it. It's her latest (I think) featuring her Count Saint Germain, who's a vampire -- an interesting hook on which to hang historical fiction. This one is set in northern Africa during the Crusades. Saint Germain is signing on as a translator for a bunch of pilgrims heading for Christian holy sites in what's now Ethiopia.

Oh my! I haven't read Yarboro's St. Germaine since Beorn was a toddler. The most recent I read was a short story collection which ended with a letter between St. Germaine and a childe of his who wanted to try having a romantic relationship with him. I'll need to see which stories have come out since then.

Amazon keeps recommending that to me - almost bought it after seeing Tanya Huff's name attached to it, but I guess she only did the introduction.

Correctamundo. She's also quoted on the front page -- as is Marion Zimmer Bradley. Schimel worked (still does, maybe?) as an editor and got to know some biggish names that way.

Finished a reread of Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie. A truly excellent book. It stands up really well to a reread and has now been added to my short(ish) stack of books I reread on a regular (approx. yearly) basis.

Currently rereading Invader by C.J. Cherryh.

I have that downloaded (I believe the Kindle version may still be available for free) to my Kindle PC on my laptop, but have not started the read yet.

Finished The Neutronium Alchemist and Assail! What comes next, only I know!

As an aside, these huge books are becoming tiring, I wonder if I'm getting old

Almost finished Dragons Of Dorcastle by Jack Campbell.

So far, so good. It doesn't seem that this is going to be a standalone book in any way though.

So as I'm coming to the end of the trilogy, I would recommend it. The first book isn't as good as the last two. Easy reading and things come a bit too easy for the main characters. But for $3.99 on Kindle for a Trilogy, I can overlook some of that. I did find myself immersed in the story and cant wait to see how it will end or if it will stop on a cliff hanger and leave it open for another book.

Yep, Ancillary Sword came out recently. I read Ancillary Justice (the first in the series) on Murrin's recommendation and it is easily my favourite sf novel from the last number of years.

Reading some Philip K. Dick over the last few days: 'Minority Report' and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? I continue not to fully get Dick. 'Minority Report' is a novel packed into a short-story and Do Androids....? is a medium-to-long novel trimmed down to 200 pages. I get it that Dick is a great ideas man, but I still struggle to enjoy his stories as I always feel that whole chunks are being left out. He often moves the action from the end of one chapter to the beginning of the next with almost nothing in between except the chapter break.
