I don't want Jason to play the part, but he has somewhat the look I'm thinking of. Or maybe an evil Phil Collins.
Ha! Evil Phil Collins! Yes!
As for Robin Williams as Hashi: I'm not sure he has the subtlety, but he can do the look. His
One Hour Photo character at least
looks more or less like my mental image of Hashi:

I'm not objecting to your comments, merely debating . . .
I could see him (Stewart) better as Warden. I'm sure Patrick could play Holt but I can't picture it... maybe I'm used to him playing somewhat sympathetic characters (Picard, Xavier).
Did you see Stewart in
Conspiracy Theory with Mel Gibson? I certainly couldn't wait for him to get his comeuppance.

There's a name I hadn't considered. Jason plays scum fairly easily, yet I imagined Milos taller and thinner. That's why I pegged Buscemi, who thrives on the marginally sympathetic roles. At first, I had just a smidgen of sympathy for Milos, trapped by his own lies, but just trying to survive. Then they put him in charge of Joshua and . . . nngggg! Nasty Donaldson, bad Donaldson!
As for Williams, good directors get exactly what they want from him.
One Hour Photo is a good example.
Awakenings with DeNiro is another. Hashi is a schemer, an imp, highly competent, and, a surprise to everyone including Hashi, loyal. Not that much of a stretch for Robin.

No worries, debate is good. Debate is fun!!

No, didn't see that one. I'll put it on the list.

Same with me. SRD likes to do that to us.

Another good example of that is "House of D." But somehow I can't quite picture him being Hashi.

Speaking of Hashi...
Anonymous asked:
Hashi happens to be my favorite character and I was wondering why (after all this time) your thoughts would be centered on him of late? Just curious!
SRD's reply:
One of my guilty pleasures is that I watch TV shows like "NCIS". (This is a guilty pleasure because it isn't exactly a productive use of my time.) David McCallum plays Dr Mallard; and watching him (probably the best actor in the cast), I was recently struck by the idea that he might make a good Hashi Lebwohl. I think he has the necessary "range". And he has a gift for seeming simultaneously befuddled and insightful. So Hashi has been on my mind.
Does anybody watch this? I don't.

David McCallum
"He is best known for his role as Illya Kuryakin, a Russian-born secret agent, on the popular 1960s television series The Man from U.N.C.L.E.."

I can't believe I never thought of him before.
And NCIS rocks.

I'm still in favor of Brent Spiner, but yeah, he'd work.

Brent Spiner!! *smacks forehead* And me a Star Trek fan.
As you can tell, I haven't read all the posts in this thread.
McCallum wouldn't be wrong as Hashi. Not my first choice though.

I haven't read through the entire thread, so I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this. I've always pictured Angus looking a lot like Jack Black. He probably couldn't pull off the role, due to his silliness. But I think he has the potential to do some very dark stuff. Kind of like Robin William's transformation in his later work.
[Hmm ... looking back I realize I've suggested this once before, and Dan has also suggested it.]

Jack Black might be able to do the evil stuff, but I'm less sure about the bad-ass part.
Michael Chiklis (
The Shield), on the other hand, already plays a bad-ass with questionable morals. Angus is all over his face.

Agreed. But Jack Black sure does look the part

Just think... Kyle Goss could play Milos (and actually, he kinda looks right for it) and then we could have...
"Tenacious D in 'The Gap into Destiny' "

I'd pay to see that.
And while I wasn't a big fan of the Kong film, Jack Black was believable in it, and didn't seem like I was watching Jack Black. But still, I think audiences would find it hard to buy him in the Angus role. And it might be career suicide for Jack Black, who tries awfully hard to be likable. Maybe in a few more years though. He needs one more serious role under his belt.

I must be watching too much LOST lately because Michael Emerson (Ben) is beginning to become Milos for me.

I'm not a Jack Black fan at all, but he was the only good thing in King Kong.
Can't see him in The Gap though.

I'm seeing Mickey Rourke as Angus---slimy nasty Marv.

Yeah, don't think I could take Jack Black seriously.

I didn't like the Brent Spiner as Hashi idea until I happened to see Independence Day last night. I must've forgotten about his part in it... now I can see it

Still trying to picture SRD's original choice for Hashi -- Colin Baker. Hmm...

Neither can I. He looks more like Godsen Frik
