Stevie, that's a tale sad enough to make Foamfollower weep.

Auleliel, hope your mom didn't get into too much trouble over that business. Sorry to hear she's got some obnoxious manager to contend with. Why does every organization seem to have one? (Whole books have probably been written to address that question.)

I suggest earplugs for your sleep-deprived mate. I use them regularly.

Alternatively, you could get one of those trendy flexible, roll-up keyboards. Presto - noiseless typing! Not that I've ever used them myself. Maybe they make a squishing noise instead.

(Welcome back, Lyr!)

I have a feeling that lost papers are the least of her problems.
She's a nurse in a specialized OR, and one of the doctors likes to blame her for all sorts of problems she has nothing to do with, from incorrect use of instruments (his fault) to low co-worker morale (also his fault). If she fixes mistakes of other nurses, she is blamed for not having noticed and prevented them sooner, or for poor communication skills, or for not taking responsibility for her room (even when it's somebody else's room). If she doesn't do what she does, patients could suffer injury.
HR can't seem to decide whether they're trying to fire her or force her to stay, and they cater to the doctor's every whim because he's a tenured specialist (and a good doctor, even though he's such a jerk). There have been months where he's refused to work with my mom in the room, and weeks when my mom was the only available nurse to work with him.
I think it's nearly gotten to the point where my mom needs to quit, for her own health.

Oh, that's terrible Auleliel. There are many specialist jerks out there - I could name a few in my small city alone!

Oh, and thanks danlo, that would be - awesome!!

They certainly aren't a rare breed. I hear my grandpa (dad's dad) was one. He was a surgeon, and I believe he acted the same way around his children too (luckily we grandchildren were exempt).
I just wish that this particular doctor hadn't chosen my mom as the person to pick on (there have been others before her who have long since been forced to quit--my mom's pretty stubborn and is probably the one he's had the hardest time getting rid of).

I think/hope that particular doctor will regret picking on your mom :D

I hope so too, but it's unlikely based on his track record and the fact that he's 70 and set in his ways.

Auleliel, your mom could get together with duchess of malfi and share notes - their situations sound eerily similar! Nursing must surely be one of the most stressful occupations around.

Thanks!

We finally got the laptop to work for me, so I shouldn't have to type while he is napping too often. The only time I have to use his desktop is when I have to type up paperwork for my job. They allow us to use a secure remote access system, and unfortunately I have had no luck installing it properly on my laptop. We were able to install it on his comp with the help of an ex-friend, but with the friend went the knowledge. God, how I hate Vista.

I've stayed away from Vista. Still using XP SP2 and still loving it!

I have a headache and I want to sleep, but I have to teach instead. Maybe I can squeeze a nap in this afternoon.

Supposedly Windows 7 is a vast improvement over Vista...

Yes, but initially wasn't Vista supposed to be a vast improvement over XP?

That I don't know as I wasn't paying attention at the time.
But, as this laptop came with Vista, I am hopeful for any possible improvements...

It's my understanding that Windows 7 is basically a fixed version of Vista - i.e. the Vista that should have been released the first time.

Yep, Danlo's a legend. A few years back, he sent me an autographed copy of Lord Foul's Bane. I've never found a way to thank him properly.

CJr, I am really sorry for the drama ... not very condusive to working on one's advanced degree.
CovenantJr wrote:He's more likely to try and weasel out of it, I think.
One of my favorite on-line quotes is "The ability to weasel out of things is what separates man from the animals ... except of course the weasel."
Regardless of how it was originally intended, I always took the quote to imply that this particular "ability" isn't that far above animalistic behavior. Sounds like it is no surprise that this loon is good at it.

It seems to me that you are trying hard to do best for all involved. I hope things work out as positively as possible (except of course for the weasel... )

 That's a good quote. Thanks. I think things will sort themselves out sooner or later. It seems the weasel might be kicked out of the house; oh, the dangers of antagonising the man whose father is your landlord.

Next winter mate. ;) (But honestly, it hadn't occurred to me that it was what you were referring to, even after the football comment. :D )

You left that part out! That's excellent! It's like I always say: there's no need to plot revenge; the Universe will always take care of it for you!

Owlie, my first job out of paralegal school was for a sole practitioner attorney who was essentially a bully. She systematically hassled every employee who walked through the doors 'til they either quit or she fired them. I lasted eight months, which apparently is admirably long. 8O The best part was when she wrote an article for a newsletter for the local legal community on hiring and keeping help. We all died laughing. Behind her back, of course. Anyhow, I feel your mom's pain, and yeah, she might just be better off finding another job. Even in this economy it shouldn't take long for a nurse to find another gig.
