I had exactly the same issue with it. That's why I said read "Night of Knives" first. It's a prequel to GoTM.

I only enjoyed GotM after I read DHG, MOI and HoC. Then I went back and read it, and it made sense.

Reading NoK first also helps give it context.

Book 2, Dead House Gates, is one of the best ever. And so is book 3 actually.

I loved Gardens right out of the gates. . Loved all the characters and stories. Not because it kept changing, but because each new character and story was great.

Youre lucky FF .. not particularly interesting characters either and he doesnt even spend time long enough on each one so that you can get to know them and appreciate them.

Its probably not my style of read .. but if I give it another go I might try find Night of Knives .. and see how that goes.

I've often heard that starting with Deadhouse Gates works fine. And, even though I like Gardens a lot, DG is amazing.

It's fiction, though it's more Horror than Fantasy/Sci-Fi.

Read Abercrombie's Half A King & Half A World this long weekend, now busy on the last book, Half A War. Not as deep or complex as his First Law series, still a fun, fast and light read with his signature twist.
