Thank you, Skyweir, though I must admit I didn't consciously choose blue as the lettering color. It is because I wanted darthbuzz to have easy access to seeing a post by a Watch member called "Reave the Unjust" explaining where Gilden-Fire should be read in the context of The Illearth War, and the lettering is by default colored blue when you make a text reply into a link, as I did.

I wanted darthbuzz to see Reave's great post, and to give Reave credit for coming up with the idea of reading Gilden-Fire between The Illearth War chapters 8 and 9, you see. Thank you for the kind words, Sky!

If you want to change the text color for your replies, you can do so above the text box when you click the "Post Reply" button or "Preview" button, as there is a drop-down menu above the text box that says "Font colour".

Hi all! I'm a long time fan of the series and look forward to diving deeper into the books!

Before I continue, I do have a confession to make. I have not finished The Last Dark. I read the first three of TTCoTC when they came out and started TLD but only got several chapters in. It's at the point that I should probably got back and reread the first three before tackling TLD. Is it worth it?

Thanks for having me!

And yes, IMO, the Last Chrons are worth it. Very worth it. YMMV.

Welcome aboard Sleepyjer. :D I liked it, but opinion is divided. Just stay our of the Last Chrons forums until you're done though, to avoid spoilers. :D

Where would you be living if not for the pandemic?

Hi all,

Brand spanking new here. Never heard of this forum until stumbling upon it today. I used to participate in some somewhat similar Tolkien-oriented forums years ago.

My history with the Donaldson books is that I had a big burst of fantasy reading when I was in my teens back in the 1990s and I would visit used book stores and grab stuff probably based on recommendations or maybe just liking the cover art. One of the series during that time that I read and that grabbed me the most effectively, and one of the only ones I still remember much or even consider revisiting, is the Thomas Covenant series.

I grabbed a couple of editions of it, the Darrel K Sweet covered ones which I found very interesting and they felt old and arcane, but I also grabbed the versions which were most recent / new as of 1995 or whenever it was. I read through them all pretty voraciously.

I picked up copies of the "Last Chronicles" in used book stores, or at least a couple of the titles in that series, but have never so much as cracked one open yet.

A few months back, I decided to try going through the titles on audiobook, as I don't think I have the same attention span or tolerance for reading through an actual physical book anymore that I once did. Sad to say and sorry to admit. I also don't have the kind of time I once did for that. I have a toddler.

Well, I went ahead and got started listening to Lord Foul's Bane and it was some old recording. I was enjoying it okay-ish but when I got to the part where the guy was voicing Foamfollower, the voice he was using was this huge immediate turnoff for me. Really goofy. I decided to check and see if there were any other recordings, and I found the Scott Brick ones. I had some Audible tokens built up so I got the original trilogy all on there, and as of last night I just completed The Power That Preserves.

I enjoyed going through the series again, though I paused for long stretches. I think I started like 3 months ago maybe. Sometimes I was listening voraciously, sometimes not for long periods and then I'd start again. I do not have the greatest memory in the world by any stretch of the imagination, and in fact it's quite poor. This meant that as I went through the original trilogy again, I'd remember some key events but much was effectively new for me again. That was kind of nice.

At this point I want to go through the second trilogy, also with Scott Brick's recordings, but sadly they are not on Audible yet and are too expensive for me on his site. We shall see.

I don't remember a ton about the second trilogy but I do remember something about blood magic and a couple of other things.

After I make my way through those, I will take a crack at the Last Chronicles I think. Something tells me I am not going to enjoy them anywhere near as much, but perhaps I am way off base in thinking that? Here's hoping. It will be weird to be in an entirely new series with no memories being triggered at all. It may be some time before I get to those books, since I don't yet know how I'm going to get started on the second chronicles.

Anyway, this may be a bit long-winded for an introduction. Or maybe the content is more appropriate for other sub-forums here. I saw a post in another forum about the desire to breathe life back into these forums. I am familiar with that trajectory where things get pretty sparse over the years. I sympathize. Sadly, I doubt I'll have the time or inclination to bring much energy myself, but I will try. Apologies in advance if I only end up making 3 posts and then vanish forever, ha. Hopefully not. Can't deny the possibility though.

Go to the Tank..... but wear a hard-hat and a Kevlar vest. If you can stick a week of that you'll be here for life!
