It's the second book of Donaldson's new fantasy trilogy The Great God's War, Sky! (The first book is called Seventh Decimate.)

Deadhouse Gates. Why did I subject myself to more Malazan? They're so much work! I had to read Gardens of the Moon twice through just to figure out what on earth it was all about. And yet, I can't put it down. It's exhausting with one horrific battle after another and everyone is half-starved and choking on dust when things are going well. I lose sight of why all this epicness is even happening,what's the big picture? People struggling endlessly through narrow scrapes with banged-up elbows... But dang it, I care about them and can't abandon them to their fates. And so I go on, tormenting myself.

Maybe this belongs in the Anti-revommendations thread, but I am not sure if I want to recommend this hellishness yet or not.

Wait, The War Within is out??

Yes, and it is well worth the read. Great book!

I finished Daughter of the Empire yesterday. It was really great, although I could do with a little less ritual suicide in my life, lol. Yeesh, not my favorite parts to read. I do really like epic fantasy with a strong female lead, I have found, and Mara is a great character. I'm about to start Servant.

Haha, glad to hear it. I think the frequency of ritual suicide does decrease a little in the rest of the series. (I think I shall re-read these once I am done with the Malazans.)

Don't get me wrong. They are GREAT books.
They do require a quality of attention that is beyond me at this moment in my life, I guess. I'll finish and read some easy something I guess, and come back when it isn't the first few, exhausting weeks of school.

Yeah, whenever I feel DHG is particularly brutal, I remind myself of the Siege of Capustan in MoI.

Currently rereading Under the Eye of God (David Gerrold). I lost my copy in the Great Flood of Whatever Year that Was, but it was (finally) released as an e-book. Now if they'd just do the same for The War Against the Chtorr. And if he'd also finish the series, that would be nice too. Worse than GRRM.

I'm almost finished Servant. It's a great book, better than the first. These books are long, though. I mostly read on my phone, and have no idea how long a book is when I start one, but I opened it up on my tablet last night and it said I was on page 700 or so and had about 20% left, lol.

Yes alas still havent read these ... Ive heard mixed reviews .. clearly yall think theyre good.

Oh Deer I really struggled with GOTM too .. but after reading the positive input here .. I would like to grit my teeth and give it another go.

GotM throws you into the middle of a world (or universe) with no map.

After you've read the first 5-6 books, go back and reread GotM, and I promise you will be amazed. Not that it isn't good the first time around, but there's so much you just don't have context for until later.

Stick with it. It can be a brutal journey (especially in book two), but it's worth it.

I can never decide which one I like best...the first has some sections I don't like, (the whole marriage / husband / etc. thing), but I still tend to think I like it more. (Although, Servant has some really great scenes.)

The Wild - book 2 of a Requiem for Homo Sapiens by Zindell. Wading my way through the start of it to be honest - I need to get my head back in the world. This one could take months!

I really enjoyed that Zindell series.
