I am doing great. In spite of half of my year's salary apparently disappearing. And we may lose our immigration status and not be able to re-enter the country after the summer which means losing my job. Among other things. I got 24 kids to hang with for the day, and that is all right.

heh.
He
claims that's just a few days growth since he stopped shaving during his trip here...
I just gave him his bottle of Makers Mark I picked up at the distillery after elohimfest last year. Now if I can somehow get an engraved barrel plate with the barrel number and his name, it will make a nice display.

True that. So far, he has demonstrated no interest in such things qua beverage, so it will remain a show item only...as long as nobody else back in Gator Town develops an interest in fine Kentucky bourbon.
Hurry, sunset. I already hear the Buffalo Trace calling me.

put in for two jobs back on my old unit. one in the kitchen and one in the laundry. not sure I want either, but if accepted I will have to seriously consider my options.
I miss my old unit. and I would have to see about getting a room again. but I get away from my captain and the black hole this job has become.
I hate change. and this would be a big change.
oddly enough this is what I am listening to.

I hate change, too. That's why I get stuck with lousy jobs. I tell myself it could be worse. That it's better to stick with the known evil.
But on the flip side, it could be better. It could be evil-free.
Evil-free is good. I'm searching myself. I hope you find an answer that makes you happy.

Hi, guys.
Linna and Sarge -- hang in there with the health issues.
Menolly -- congrats on getting Beorn to the Left Coast!

How long is he there for?
To answer Jenn's question from forever ago: Saturday is when I go home. The firm sent me to Denver for two weeks, for starters; then it got extended a week. Now I'm going home (which is good because I've got stuff to attend to there) for a couple of weeks, and the secretary I had replaced is coming back for that period of time. Then she goes on vacation for a week, and I have been assuming they'll send me back out here while she's gone. That brings us into June. By then, we'll have two more associates on board, and at least two more associates and a paralegal are coming shortly. That would bring us to 10 attorneys/paralegals in the office.
The firm is currently advertising for two secretarial positions: one intellectual property legal secretary (which I don't have any experience in, although I think if somebody trained me on what to do, it wouldn't be that hard to learn) and one regular ol' legal secretary. I've formally applied for the plain ol' legal secretary gig, but have told HR that I think I could do either one. I figured I was a shoo-in for the job I applied for -- but I learned something today that made me wonder. The newest partner, Andy, came to us from a law firm across the street, and his secretary there is applying to work for him at our firm. If they hire her for the plain ol' legal secretary position, and the IP partners decide they want someone with real IP experience, well.
I mean, maybe they'll open up another secretarial position in the Denver office. But I'm mindful of the fact that in DC, the ratio these days is one secretary to five (or more) lawyers. If we have ten lawyers in the Denver office, that's two secretaries, which is what they're advertising for.
Sigh.
I said to somebody a few days ago that I figured I'd be saying, "I dunno what's going on," for another two or three weeks, and then everything would get sorted in a hurry.

The partners in charge in Denver seem to like me, and they're talking like they expect me to come back. So...I dunno what's going on.... Gonna get through tomorrow and go home, and have dinner with dlb and Luci and Creator Monday night (whoo hoo!!), and support all the Denver folks from afar like I've been supporting my DC folks from afar for the past three weeks, and we'll see what happens.

Good luck, Ali. It seems unlikely that they would have sent you out there if they weren't seriously considering you, and now that they've seen how awesome you are... I don't seem to have any work karma to spare, but fingers crossed anyway.

had an interview with laundry at my old unit. when I sat down told the laundry captain who I knew from my time there that I didn't know all the answers to what she would ask me. but told them I had been in the system for 15 years. reminded her that I ran the bath house at times. that I had done necessities. and she remembered me helping out.
first question was about soap. told her I had no idea what kind of soap they used , but we used soap in the kitchen and I would learn her soap.
second was why we use bleach. easy - for sanitation.
third was necessities - sheets, blankets, mattresses, clothing. got that right since I've done necessities for her.
one for one - inmates get one piece of clothing for one piece. I do that all the time.
forget the fifth question.
I wil either get a call or won't. she liked me and I worked for her husband before as well. (building rank.) and I think one or two in the laundry are there from when I was at the unit before.

Beorn's heading back east in a couple of hours. I enjoyed the visit very much, and I think he did too. Hopefully he'll be able to come out sooner the next time.

Glad you had Beorn up there to visit you, Menolly.

Hearing "Always too short." in your voice..

Me three.
But then I often yearn after things that go with change, so... yeah.
dotd wrote:In spite of half of my year's salary apparently disappearing.
Whaaaat?
Nooo..
Here on my end, I think some good has been made of a kinda bad week. Got the flu Thursday.
But for me, it was.. just one day and like a normal flu. Just something I could rest through the duration of and it passed. Yay.
A lower point of the week was me crashing under the shame of a failed tutoring session; 90 minutes of nothing because I'd forgotten a statistics topic and was going around in circles instead of productively figuring out how to do some internet searches & come up with a plan that worked. :-\
But now that stuff has passed and I'm peaceful and happy. (Yay.)
Spent last night just lounging around reading. (Yay.)

I could use a hug. My niece decided Facebook was a great place to swear at me and declare her hate for me. This is not the first time we've been down this road and since I decided I don't need a toxic 17 year old in my life I have un-friended her for the time being. I let her mother know but last time she just made excuses for her daughter. Family is extremely important to me, but I won't be abused.
I have my opinions and I'm not afraid to say what they are, although they diverge from the main stream. And I welcome disagreement as long as it is done with respect. This was not the case here...
I am really thankful for the Watch, where (outside of the Tank) people are generally very accepting of weirdos like myself. Peace out!!

Ahh, toxic family.
Can't offer much advice, but it sounds like you did the right thing.
