MM, Sea you are welcome to join the laundry club of SF anytime you want. We would LOVE to have you guys. I found out recently that my friend from high school has a rare brain disorder called NPH.

Here is a definition: Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus is a neurological condition which normally occurs in adults 55-years and older. NPH is an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) causing the ventricles of the brain to enlarge, in turn, stretching the nerve tissue of the brain causing a triad of symptoms.

He is getting worse and that sucks. The symptoms often mimic parkinson's and alzheimers. He has bouts of dementia and bouts of lucidity. We had a good long talk last night and another tonight. I dug out a whole bunch of old pics and tomorrow I'm gonna scan them in and send them to him. It made me laugh about some of the silly times we had back in HS. We were so 80's chic is isn't funny.

He is very fortunate to have a friend like you.

I feel like life attacked recently. In the last week the following things happened:

1) I fell on the ice at work and messed up a tendon in my left wrist going to my thumb.
2) Had our apartment's sewer pipes freeze in sub-zero weather, necessitating a hotel stay we really can't afford.
3) Melting snow left my back car window so dirty that in the glare of sunlight I couldn't see there was a hvac truck behind me in a no parking zone, and I backed into him causing enough damage to his truck I had to file a claim with my insurance. AND I busted out my tail light doing it.

But there is some good news:

Your last bit of news might explain the distractedness that could have contributed to some of your other news, Lyr. Congrats!!

Congrats, Lyr! Oh, and kiss your life goodbye now, before the kid has you so busy taking care of him/her you won't even have time to think about it! Case in point: my oldest turns 17 in 3 weeks, and I'm positive I was holding him for the first time only a few months ago......

Congrats, Lyr! But my sympathies in regards to your accidents and your apartment woes.
I could not afford anything happening to my apartment either.

CMJ, like lorin said, I'm glad your colleague has someone like you he can talk to. I wish him the very best.
Dementia and Alzheimer's are two of the most dreaded words in the language to me.

For me it's 'ex' and 'wife', but that's probably because I can't pronounce yours.

Dammit, dAN, you're on a roll here...

Oh, and "marriage" would be another most dreaded word to me.

"Children" is probably mine. Luckily the GF and I are agreed on the issue.

Thanks everyone for the support. John has a very good attitude about it. I wish I had more photos but about ten years ago I had an ugly flooding incident wipe out pretty much all my pics from fifth grade up to senior year in HS. Some of the ones I salvaged still have a bit of water damage to them. I used to have a ton of pics of John and I since we took a jewelry class that shared the room with the photography class of which two of our friends were enrolled. As a result, John and I got roped into being models for many projects and only two of the pics survived the disaster, both from our friend Tim's study of white on white. It has been fun taking a trip down memory lane with John. We just faded apart mainly because I moved first to Boston and then to the west coast, but our reconnection feels like we never lost touch at all, all the same love and respect and appreciation for one another is there just as it was so many years ago. Quite cool actually. Also they have had lots of success treating NPH, they just need to figure out the best med attack for John's metabolism. It's rare enough that there is a lot of trial and error involved. I have faith that they will figure it out. He's too awesome and strong to let this defeat him.

I'm very sorry to hear of that flood, Jenn. Personal photos are among the most precious things in anyone's possessions. It must have been hard to lose so many pictures, such tangible links to the past - severed. I hope I never have to face that situation.

But glad to hear that there exists effective treatment for your friend's condition.

It's not a pleasant one, that's for sure. Living here, I dread words such as "gooder" or "funner" or "ain't". *shudder*

I didn't for some of 'em. But yes, that is really, really cool.

50 % of my co-workers are Haitian. Such confusion and such loss. People can't reach their families, many family members are dead.

Haiti is a country already so damaged by poverty and corruption, how will they survive this? There is no infrastructure to begin with. It will not be long until everything collapses, leading to riots and panic. The cynical side of me says that the foreign aid and probable intervention may put them in a better place than they have been in for a hundred years.
