Just found out today that I will indeed be going to the A Perfect Circle / Mars Volta concert on Sunday. Best birthday present ever.

Yes, they are really good. I'd like to have seen the Mars Volta, but we didn't get them on the UK tour. Have fun!

So, went to the concert last night. It was everything I expected and more. Thankfully, there was no Mars Volta (interesting music, but I can only take 'em in small doses). Instead, it was Burning Brides opening up. I checked out some of their stuff when I heard they were going to be playing Lollapalooza. I believe they only did the West Coast dates, though. Anyway, they were pretty good. Thrash with a bit of stoner rock bent to it. Check out their single Arctic Snow (though it's a lot more radio friendly than most of their stuff).

At first I wasn't too into it, but my tickets were for row R way in the back corner. Nosebleeds. I am not exaggerating when I say it was no place for anybody remotely acrophobic to be. Steep concrete steps, no rails. But Hellfire suggested we take some seats down next to the stage that were empty. I figured why not, we could always move if somebody showed up with tickets. So then we were literally a stone's throw from the stage. Much better. This was about half-way through Brides' set, and I really got to appreciate the enthusiasm they brought to the stage (not that you could tell by the crowd, but the only openers I've ever really seen the crowd get into is the man, Rob Zombie). We ended up keeping those seats the whole time we were there.

A Perfect Circle was f'n awesome. The set was really dark. Nothing too flashy. Maynard's face was in shadow the entire show. They set the mood as they opened with Vanishing, but quickly rolled into the heavier stuff with The 13th Step. They played most of their songs off both albums (no extras, though), including Magdalena, The Noose, and a very different version of The Nurse Who Saved Me. The only song I didn't hear that I wanted was Sleeping Beauty. Ah well, I am content.

Maynard had a couple small monologues. One about voting, the other about censorship. Related to the latter, the new A Perfect Circle video will be released tomorrow (May 4) as a DVD single.

Anyway, it sounds like the show was as good as the one I went to (presumably without the drunken heckler who only bought a ticket so he could keep telling Maynard to stick with Tool

)...as long as they played Magdalena, I was happy

Ok, I'm going to see NOFX on Monday - not quite in the same league as APC perhaps, but they were the third punk band I heard after the Offspring and Bad Religion, and they're still one of my favourites. I've been waiting years for them to tour here, so I'm quite excited

I'm sure I can muster a brief gig report afterwards...

Yeah, man, I know what you're saying. I remember checking out some of their mp3s and thinking they had a mostly 70s garage kind of sound (re-dl'd them an hour ago, and yeah). They are a lot different live. More guttural, a lot more reverb. A whole lot of thrash riffs. The way they played it, even Arctic Snow didn't sound quite the same - less radio friendly. Better, I'd say. Oh, and Dimitri came out and played for one of the APC songs. Checking my files, and for the closest to how they sounded is the track Plastic Empire (which they played, if memory servers).

We didn't have any hecklers, but we did have this girl who must not have been listening to the same music as the rest of us. The whole set, she was dancing like a stripper or a belly dancer to no discernable rhythm. Occasionally her hands or her shoulders would find a beat, but I think she might have been dancing (not really the right word) to Maynard's voice.

Yeah, 70s garage-style is closer to my interpretation too. I'll go and dig out the CD, see what I think of Plastic Empire. I remember thinking when I listened to that album that my then-girlfriend would probably like it, which firmly negates the thrash/stoner idea

Sounds like the dancing woman was probably more entertaining than the heckler, but I don't recall anyone dancing during APC's set...perhaps Nottingham has a more cerebral breed of music fan

That reminds me of the drunken-tripped out guy who used to follow the Dead back in the 70's and constantly scream out, "Johnny Be Good! Johnny Be Good!" Or course all the stoners were too paralysed to do anything about it until they had "Neon-Flashlight Promo Night" in Waterford Connecticut and he finally got pelted by about 50 of em.

I have no problem with flying to Montana, but I probably wouldn't go to Warped while I'm there...

I've decided I'm going to see a British band called New Disease later in the month (anyone who's curious, download Song Of One Word, if you can find it) and another American punk band, Tsunami Bomb, in June.

The singer's a girl, yes. I saw them supporting the Vandals a while back. They're one of my favourite punk bands

Ok, I saw NOFX last night...it was great. Fat Mike must have been born to the stage. I've never seen anyone so at home in front of a crowd, or so happy; he had a big grin on his face the whole time, and seemed to be genuinely loving every minute. They played a selection from the new album, mixed in with some old favourites (including a couple I didn't expect) and the odd request from the audience; it was almost note-perfect all the way, which is pretty unusual for a punk band. The whole thing was rounded off by a good ten minutes or so of Eric Melvin playing the accordian, encompassing NOFX's own tunes, fragments of traditional jig-style ditties, and even a little Elvis. Very, very good performance (the between-song banter is almost semi-professional stand-up) and one of the most fun gigs I've been to. Ever.

I suppose I should mention the support while I'm here. The second band of the night was the Swingin' Utters, who struck me as a pretty bland, bouncy-punk-by-numbers kind of band. Not actually bad, but totally nondescript. The first band, however, were a much more interesting proposition, and I picked up their album on the way out. The Epoxies - a new wave-tinged punk band with a manic lead singer who brought to mind a female Mick Jagger, in terms of high energy erratic dancing. The album is pretty good, but the live show is better; obviously the boundless vigour of "Roxy Epoxy" doesn't come across quite so clearly on cd.

Went to see Metallica in Amsterdam earlier this week-they put on a great show as always!
Supported by Slipknot and Korn. They didn't do much for me but the singer in Korn's mike stand by Gieger was impressive!

Also went to see 3 other bands the next night-only the one singer known for his...well...what can only be called a 'eye opening' act.
