I personally liked Oceans 1-10 better than 11 or 12.

Yup, definitely overrated. So are both Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

Here's another: Shakespeare in Love. I actually do like this movie, but there's NO WAY IN HELL it should have won Best Picture over Saving Private Ryan.

Thank (I think) Mirimax for politicking the Academy with faxes and gifts. Another period piece whose release is timed for special Oscar effect. Yawn.

Well, dlb, at least you saw Shakespeare In Love. I was so disgusted by its taking Best Picture over Saving Private Ryan that I boycotted it. Yeah, I know, a silly overreaction.

Still, it's that kind of dubious voting that leaves the Academy's credibility shaky, if not completely in shambles.

MM, in all fairness Shakespeare is a good movie, with good writing and excellent performances. BUT - it wasn't the best movie of that year, by a long shot.

Yeah...and in fairness to the makers of Shakespeare In Love, the Oscar win was probably more important for their careers than it would have been for Spielberg's. Not to mention the increased box office business Shakespeare In Love must have gotten, and that's always good news for a smaller budget, independent movie. It's not like Saving Private Ryan needed the extra revenue (I think it was the biggest grossing movie of that year). But that's getting into the politics of the Academy, the "strategic" voting. It's like, "Spielberg won already, let's give it to some other person."

Oh, and I never saw The English Patient. But one period piece that did bore me/irritate me was Howard's End. I remember thinking throughout the whole movie: was there a point to this story?

I haven't seen Howard's End, but I wish that I hadn't watched The English Patient.

Donnie Darko. Lauded beyond belief, yet still a bit rubbish.

Lost In Translation. Honestly one of the worst 'recommended' films I've seen (I've seen far worse films that everypne agreed were terrible). Dreadful bit of tat. Yuck.

I rather liked "Donnie Darko." It's not the masterpiece scenesters make it out to be, but it is a pretty good film I thought.

Couldn't agree more on both. People rave about both, and I thought they were both dreck. LiT pissed me off because that was a mainstream hit, DD pissed me off because it's a cult hit, and the fanboys insist that if you don't like it, you must be too dense to get it. I get it, it's just not good.

Stopped watching DD after about 20 minutes, couldn't stand it. I forced myself to watch all of Lost in Translation only because of Scarlett Johanssen, but in hindsight I wish I had those 2 hours of my life back.

Yes, exactly. Well, I never saw DD, but LiT was same way for me.

As far as cult hits, I've never actually gone and seen the Rocky Horror Show. I've always assumed it's overrated among its most dedicated fans, but I still plan on seeing it sometime. Just too lazy to go to a showing.

"I <3 Huckabees" blows so badly. I hated that movie. Add that to the list of crappy cult, "deep" films.

I think most people hated that movie, though, so I dunno if it's really overrated :P

EDIT-Huckabees was one of those "not worth hating" films for me. I was angry I paid to see it, though.

I liked LiT. It wasn't a side-splitting laugher, but it wasn't meant to be, it was a lot more subtle than that and I found myself smiling at the culture clashes in the movie.

Holstey,

Heh yeah, perhaps, but the movie came highly recommended to me by my friends. *shrug* It got good reviews, didn't it? Wiki says the reviews were "mixed." Expected...

Completely agree. I thought Shakespeare in Love was a very good movie (though I think it would have been a lot better if Paltrow had concentrated more on acting than on flashing her titties at the camera every twenty minutes) - but Saving Private Ryan is a truly great and landmark film.

Yay Damelon!! What a relief. We must be among the very few here who like Lost In Translation.

Rocky Horror Picture Show: For me, it's all about the songs. I really don't care too much about the movie. I caught it on TV once and found it poorly lit and poorly executed. That amateurism is probably a basic part of its appeal, but I'd rather watch polished filmmaking, thanks.

Rocky Horror, to me, was all about the theater experience. I saw it in NYC my first time, so I may be a bit biased. It's a horrible movie, but the experience was great.

I'm one of the people that didn't think SPR was all that great. It's decent, but it doesn't make my top 10 war movies.
