I tried to write a definitive narrative on the Big Day Out, but alas my computer crashed as I hit "send", and I didn't have the energy to write another.
But here I am, with an abbreviated version!
Bands we saw:
Jim Jones Review
Washington
CSS
Bliss n Eso
Angus and Julia Stone
Crystal Castles
Paul Dempsey
John Butler Trio
Iggy and the Stooges
Rammstein
Tool
Of these, the undisputed highlight, because we hadn't heard much of them, and they were fantastic, was the JIM JONES REVIEW!! Brilliant rock blues from London, charismatic lead singer. It was great to hear the blues, in an energetic rock - almost punk - light!
There was a huge hype around Crystal Castles, and a massive crowd. But I believe in Billy Connolly's philosophy that some things you just don't get. In this case, I just didn't get Crystal Castles. To me, it sounded like a girl screaming incomprehensively, and annoyingly, into a microphone. The crowd seemed to like it though...
Bliss n Eso said "shit" a lot, and despite a few hit songs, they didn't do much for me. I appreciate their "skill" on the decks, but don't get it
Washington, CSS, Angus and Julia Stone, Paul Dempsey, John Butler Trio were all entertaining.
Iggy was great, because he was so old school! He coaxed 50 odd people on to the stage, much to the chagrin of the security guards, and sent them into a frenzy!
Rammstein were hilarious! Massive German flag, fire coming out of the microphone, they actually set someone on fire. Very theatrical.
Tool were good. A good mix of old and new songs. Some variety in their songs - they didn't just play a studio version of some of their songs, they actually extended some of them with drum solos etc. I found the set too short, but understand that they could only play within a certain timeframe. Maynard said 2 words to the crowd, and they were both "Thank you" in his quiet voice. I wasn't disappointed, but I felt a pang of regret not seeing Grinderman.

i need to win the lottery and go with you.
Pyramid: i am assuming you have seen Morrissey and U2. Gaslight ANthem is a nice straight ahead rock band. but the winner if you love indie folk is the Low Anthem. and of course Paul Simon.
other stage: Primal Scream - love those guys circa Loaded. Queens of the Stone Age is a great rock band. Bright Eyes you must already know. TV on the Radio is an awesome art rock band. I love them! Mumford we have talked about.
West Holts : meh. the best is Cee Lo. but meh.
John Peel : I assume you know Noah and the Whale? a friend of mine is very high on Yuck - and i trust his opinion. kind of grunge rock.
Park Stage: othe than Mick and BAD - i got nothing.
dance village: not my style. but Fatboy and Digweed are the best of the lot.
acoustic tent: I have seen Raul Malo live - man has an amazing voice. Nick Loe you already know. and I guess you also know the Hothouse Flowers, had no idea they were still together.
sPirit of 71: you know I just love Robyn, but I believe you have seen him before. Arthur Brown is still touring???
Avalon : Barenaked ladies of course. Flogging Molly always. Low NAthem are also here. so you have leverage with them.
Theater & Circus / Kidzfield / Green Fields - on you own.
enjoy and let us know which you choose.

I wanna go too!
Pyramid: The bands that are not big names on this stage, I can't comment on as I've not heard them
Other stage: Eels, certainly, and a friend really likes Bright Eyes, though I've only heard a few songs myself. Fleet Foxes I've only heard one song from, but do really like. If I was going, I'd check them out if they don't conflict with another must see. I've liked the songs from Jimmy Eat World that I've heard as well.
West Holts: I'd probably see Jimmy Cliff on this stage, but that's about it.
John Peel: No help here. Nor with the dance stage or Park stage other than BAD.
Acoustic: I liked me some Suzanne Vega before Luka came out, so I can't comment much on her after that, and I'm sure she's had a bunch of songs after. Other than what Sarge said, I'd add Newton Faulkner. My wife likes at least one album of his, and whenever one of his songs come on in a random mix, it always sounds great, and I ask who it is, but listening to the album with the songs back to back tend to make me stop listening.
Spirit: I have nothing to add that Sarge hasn't already, other than to emphasize my love fro Robyn Hitchcock. Although the last album I bought from him left me a bit cold, which is odd because for a period there, he was putting out nothing but pure gems.
Avalon: I'd again agree with Sarge, although I've not heard Low Anthem. I'd definitely add Devotchka, and if I were there, I'd check out KT Tunstall. I've heard a few of her songs that I've liked just fine, but never moved me to pick anything up. But I've heard her stuff that can't be played on the radio due to a potty mouth tends to be better, so I've been curious about her. And I'd probably feel like giving my childhood me a treat by seeing the Wombles if they are indeed the costumed bunch, if I had nothing else to do. Oh, and in the full list, The Popes, which if I'm not mistaken used to be fronted by Shane MacGowan, and were very good in their own right. Though not as good as the Pogues without Shane.
Other than that, I've got nothin'.

Thank you sarge and cag!
Sarge: some stuff I've never listened to that I must check out - tv on the radio, noah and the whale, yuck, BAD (know the name can't remember the tunes), digweed, bare naked ladies (again, know the name..)
already planned - low anthem, paul simon, flogging molly, primal scream (maybe, but they clash with 6 other bands I'd love to see
seen them many times)
Cag: Eels and Bright Eyes are on the MUST see list, Fleet Foxes only if the sun is shining! KT T I don't know but my niece loves her so will go and see. The Wombles? I reckon they'll be the hidden highlight of the festival, just praying they're not headlining on Friday night like all the other bands I want to see!
Never heard of jimmy eat world but will check out. Devotcha likewise, but you're the 2nd recommendation I've had and I've heard they're great live so must go and see. Popes? Maybe if nothing else grabs my attention.
and as for Robyn Hitchcock, when I finally get round to taking this recommendation I'm sure I'll regret all the missed opportunities, but I think plain old 'Robyn' is a more likely one for me to see. Maybe. Seen her before and she's great, but I AM going to try to give preference to bands I haven't seen before this year. Depends on how the mud and/or scorching sun affect my energy levels!

Oh, if you've not seen Robyn Hitchcock, do yourself a treat and do so. I saw him a few years ago and in a very small club in Denver, and it ranks up there in the top 10 concerts of all time. I like his music, but he was often guilty of overproducing. He is much better when he is stripped down, and a live show if where he is best, in my opinion. Check out Storefront Hitchcock filmed by Jonathan Demme. It is a very good example of his live show.

Cag and Sarge - this Saturday could be the day I finally see Robyn Hitchcock, at last! (as long as he doesn't clash with Kissmet)
Wychwood lineup the first festival of the year this weekend
and it's the local one, about 20 minutes walk from my house.

I'm really looking forward to Cornershop tonight, never seen them before, and I know they won't have Fatboy Slim with them, but this is one of my favourite songs ever.Cagliostro wrote:Seconded. Damn...all these festivals there I want to go to. I'd be there for Cornershop and Waterboys for the latest.sgt.null wrote:enjoy - give a review of the show afterwards.
Waterboys? Hmmm. Doing Yeats is one thing (and a very impressive thing at that), but every time I think of them now, Father Noel comes to mind (17.18 )

The Father Noel link is blocked from my country, so I can't tell what that is about. They have a heap of good songs, but I've not ever been rabid about them, so I think I only have about 3 albums and one greatest hits thingy. They seem like they'd be perfect for an outdoor concert. There are only three bands I can think of that sound perfect for outdoor concerts - Waterboys, Hothouse Flowers and the Bodeans. I can't explain why I think that way though.

<---- no longer a robyn hitchcock virgin.
Unfortunately he didn't do any of his own stuff, so I'm still a bit in the dark. He did a tribute to Captain Beefheart, played the whole of Cold Spot album plus a couple of others. I did enjoy his weird banter in between songs.
Been a good weekend so far - as usual the much anticipated acts aren't as good as I remember (Kissmet) and the unexpected are great (Cornershop, Waterboys, Charlatans, Neville Staple). Neville Staple was truly unforgettable - (A message to you)Rudi, Gangsters, Ghost town, all the ska classics, and he is really charismatic onstage too, which I love - plenty of chat and laughter.
Been special for a couple of other reasons too - There's this wonderful food stall at Wychwood and Glastonbury that do an unbelievably tasty fish curry, I've been pestering the guys who work there for years that I want one of their t-shirts. This year there was a new guy front of stall, so i decided to blag him a bit, telling him that normal guy promised me a t-shirt this year and so on and so on, then normal guy walks out from the back where he was cooking, with a t shirt for me!
And on top of that, the festivals bars are selling my favourite ever cider, that I haven't been able to find anywhere for about 11 years
Today I'm looking forward to Roddy Woomble, The Wurzelz, Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull), and Transglobal Underground. Unfortunately it's raining

That's disappointing the Robyn didn't do his own stuff. Well, then, you'd just need to see him again. But I do love his stage banter.
And I didn't realize that Neville Staple was the guy with the Specials. I've seen them play and enjoyed it quite a bit. Enjoy today's show despite the rain. I'm curious how Ian Anderson is live.

Ian Anderson was very good. We had a sing along to Aqualung and a dance to Locomotive Breath and plenty of dreamy flute playing over some proper rock. He comes across as a bit of a prat when he's talking between songs. *shrug* you're probably allowed that when you've sold as many albums as he has!
The Wurzels were a singalong success even though it was raining hard when they were on. With classics like 'drink up ye cider' and 'blackbird' and 'champion dung spreader' mixed in with wurzel-ised covers like 'ruby ruby ruby (ooh-arr ooh-arr ooh-arr)' and a dance mix of 'combine harvester', how could they not be?
Eddi Reader was ... nice. Just ok to good.
Transglobal Underground were a great dancy way to end the weekend.
