Really?? Surely I'm not the only one who stood and cheered when Leo finally drowned, am I?

Gone with the Wind's total gross, adjusted for inflation, including rereleases, still doesn't even equal Titanic's worldwide gross without inflation adjustment, nor even RotK, Caribbean 2 or DK.
Since GwtW doesn't have a worldwide gross, then comparing it to the worldwide grosses from other films is meaningless. The only data which pertain are those which are present for all films under consideration.

Since we can only compare them by domestic gross adjusted for inflation, then GwtW far outgrossed Titanic.

(The movie is still crap, however, and I agree that Titanic was a better film overall).

Finally watched District 9 over the weekend.
First of all I thought it was a masterful piece of work. Gritty, realistic and engaging. Sci Fi in its purest form.
I hadn't had a reaction to a film quite like that since Saving Private Ryan.
And in that sense, like Ryan, I'll probably never watch it again.
I felt the film was far more instructive than it was entertaining, which I believe is the point.

I can't imagine watching Children of Men or Schindler's List or District 9 with anything approaching joy or glee (outside of marveling at it's cinematic and technical achievements. ) I'm just not wired up that way.
A fantastic film any way you look at it to be sure but not a picture I'd pop in for a fun afternoon.

Yeah, agreed, TOM. I found it intellectually exhausting to watch. Which is a good thing, but not something that rewards repeated viewing.

I enjoyed the film and I think plausible answers can be found for most things, I particularly liked that the movie never resolved and left a number of 'what-ifs'. But I'm amazed it took to page 4 where Rigel brought up District 6, for anyone to link the movie to aparteid.

The aliens are in a township, hemmed in and are representative of the portrayal of black South Africans under aparteid (this can be further extended to a number of other theatres of captivity and abuse, including but decidedly not limited to Gitmo, the camps for the Kenyan Mau Mau as well as the likes of Dachau and Belsen and Phnom Phen). All the key factors are there, weakened and impoverished state, dehumanisation (fairly easy in this case), segregation and then problem status. That they used South Africa cannot have been accidental, nor the use of black township interviewees to further qualify the lowliness of their status.

The portrayal of humanity is I fear pretty accurate. I could very easily see corporate and governmental greed, grasping for technological edges and the paranoia of our species dissecting, experimenting and doing the whole nazi slew of horrors on a captive alien species, whilst broadcasting the very opposite. Hell we don't need commies or muslims when we have aliens to unite against!

I think JazFusion makes some good points too especially about Wikas, I supopose that the characterisation is about being broken and reborn as part of a redemption out of bigotry, (maybe a sort of thumbnail sketch of a mini history of SA and aparteid). Forgive me Av if my details is not spot on, but I think it more than curious that its set in Jo'burg.

Another theme is that truth gets out.....eventually. The open end is about the all the things that can now happen as a result of two aliens escaping to tell others that we are experimenting on their people. What are the consequences of this? Do we start to treat them decently rather than merely as subjects for exploitation....its sounds not from the movie. Will they come back to collect them or kill or disinherit humanity? Will Wikas be restored by Christopher coming back in three years, which then begs the question about the extent of alien "humanity" (or should that be "alienity" or "prawnity"?).

I've just got back from the cinema so I'm still full of it, but I think there are a lot of questions the movie kicks up in the realms of sociology, anthropology, politics and philosophy and I'm sure many other "ophys" and "ologys".

I was a bit unsure about the geo-politics with the ship not arriving above New York or London or Beijing or Moscow. I'd be willing to bet there would be a whole lot of fighting for possession of the alien technology, though MNU did seem to be a bit KBR/Haliburton in nature including the private security service, all empowered through an outsourcing agreement with the SA government, which is plausible. Not so sure about Nigerians though would the locals allow such a thing?

I'd bet that regardless of place, the larger powers would be all over the area around the ship, we (the US) would probably have troops at a new permanent base, and also the UN would be there. The whole concept of a corp being brought in allows the rest of the story, but is pretty unrealistic.

oh yeah and malik, i did go see it again. ger hadn't seen it so he and i went.

yeah...second time around some things kind of bothered me.
for instance the fight/action scenes seemed much longer and more protracted than they needed to be and there were a LOT of them. that sort of bugged me on second viewing. lots of fight, not enough story.
however, if you watch the panel discussion and hear how the film was put together sort of "on the fly" this sorta makes sense. it is, after all, based on a 9 minute short.
on second viewing i have to say that yeah, there was a POTENTIAL for this film to be brilliant but it didn't quite get there. still, given all that, i like it and probably will get the dvd.

While I agree that humans can be pretty shitty, I don't think the portrayal of this shittiness was at all accurate. It felt like caricatures.

I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I hope that wasn't my fault. :) Like I said, I'm looking forward to my second viewing on the home theater. We're almost completely moved into our new place. New sofa and recliner are due tomorrow. I can't wait.
