Dancing In The Dark remains a favorite 80's song for me, no matter what danlo says, heh heh. :)

And as a rebuke to danlo's belittlement of this gem of a song ( ) let me quote Dave Marsh -- co-editor of the Rolling Stone Record Guide and himself an authoritative voice on Springsteen, having written two biographies of The Boss, Born To Run and Glory Days. Dancing In The Dark was good enough in Marsh's estimation that he included the song in his book, The Heart of Rock & Soul: The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made. This was his take on the song:
A sort of locked room mystery: A guy who's been bottled up too long finally succumbs to a seizure of rage and turns on himself, dissecting with eloquent contempt everything from his hairstyle to his housekeeping habits. As rock star plaints go, this has got it over all the rest, because it's frank about the real problem: he's bored. And because the whiner provides his own solution, with the hottest rhythm track he's ever created, thanks to drummer Max Weinberg and a heap of electronics.
Marsh ranked Dancing In The Dark at #281 on his list. Admittedly, he also ranked Born To Run (the song, not the album) in his book much higher, at #24. Nevertheless, I'm pleased that a Springsteen enthusiast like Marsh finds Dancing In The Dark praiseworthy. :) By the way, this is a very entertaining and informative book to read, even if you may not agree with his choices. Marsh is very opinionated, but he's also a funny guy, and his deep knowledge of rock n roll's history is evident on every page, as well as his love for the music. And he's just a plain fabulous writer. Highly recommended reading. :D

Er, now we return you to your regularly scheduled topic: Who do you hate the most...

MM, I didn't like the Boss at all in the 80's, I was a punk/metalhead. About two years ago I actually listened to Dancing in the Dark, and realized that the song was about me getting older (Glory Days too, to a lesser extent). It's a great song, and it helped me discover what a great artist Springsteen could be.

Interestingly, from that era I like I'm On Fire the best. A short piece, a masterpiece. That's the Springsteen I like.

Neat anecdote, Cail. And sorry, danlo, if it seemed like I sprung some kind of ambush on you with my reply. I just had the Dave Marsh quote on hand, so I used it. I'm not suggesting Marsh's opinion supercedes yours (or dANdeLION's).

I'm with you on that one. I'm not a big Springsteen fan, but I do like that.

I'm On Fire is a great tune. A little dark, a little brooding......and that is always Springsteen at this best.

Boringplay . . . . uh I mean Coldplay. Once you've heard one Coldplay song you've heard them all. Have a theory that they don't have concerts - just performances for insomniacs, in which Coldplay charges a fortune so that they make them sleep.

I'm with you, Loremaster.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

I would love to toss Coldplay, Radiohead, Jason Mraz, John Mayer, Train, Nickleback, Staind, Audioslave, Maroon 5, Linkin Park, Simple Plan, Avril Lavigne, Good Charlotte, Lenny Kravitz, and a bunch of others into a chipper/shredder and fertilize my lawn with them.

i can't believe anyone'd group Radiohead in with the likes of Linkin Park and Coldplay, Cail!!!???

oh, i know, big weirdness factor attached to Thom York and Amnesiac, Kid A, and Hail to the Thief don't really measure up to The Bends and OK Computer, but come ON!! cut us Radiohead diehards a bit of a break, won't you??

i think there are all sorts of bands that dont get the recognition they deserve but one band that dont get ENOUGH is radiohead. i think they went through a little bit of a self indulgent stage a few years ago, making music only they would really want to listen to but i've been fortunate to have seen them live twice and they blew my mind. they are one of the great bands of our time.

coldplay and the killers are ok and nothing special.

the rest of cails list is spot on though IMO. how can jon lennon get shot and maroon 5 are allowed to keep making music??? :D

who do I hate the most? Rap and anyone who screams. And personally, I will pick electronic music over anything else any day.

Based on their hype alone, Radiohead gets into the chipper/shredder. But above that, I don't like the music, not one little bit.

Journey is right behind them in line, along with Styx and Boston.

ok...i'll agree to disagree on Radiohead but only because you've put Journey, Styx, and Boston in the chipper. you get MAJOR MAJOR points for that!!!

Same here. I like Radiohead now, but I don't much care for Journey, Styx or Boston.

I dismissed Radiohead at first, after taking a chance on their debut album Pablo Honey and not liking it at all. But a listen to an MP3 download of OK Computer changed my mind about the band.
