Wuthering Heights?

Right on both...ya beat Io by a nose!

Figured it would be an easy one.

But I love Kate.

And that song.

Barker, "Great and Secret Show." [And/or the sequel "Everville."] I didn't think it was nearly as obscure as some of the early ones.

I suppose any book can be obscure if you've never heard of it. :D Some of my friends have never heard of Thomas Covenant - can you believe that? I could quote you the plots of all 30+ of Angela Thirkell's Barchester books, but I bet no-one here will have ever heard of her or them.

All righty then! In this semi-autobiographical book, a young Englishman roams the countryside, falling in with a group of Roma (gypsies) who accept his fellowship since he is gifted with languages and quickly picks theirs up. No one knows how much of his travelogue is true and how much artistic liberty he took. In the sequel to the book I'm looking for his adventures continue with him falling in love with a female vagabond in a similar situation to his own, but alas, she rebuffs his attraction and disappears, leaving a letter that she has gone to America.

I'm stumped yet again, alas.

Edit: On second thought, after looking around on Wikipedia I'm going to take a stab at: Lavengro, by George Barrow?
