LOL! I meant that it's the highest grossing film of all-time, and Cain't Touch This was the most recognizable rap song of it's time. Titanic is trounced by many...Cagliostro wrote:Really? Ugh...I still haven't done this, have I? Awright, I'll give it a shot. I'm sure next week, I'd give a completely different list.
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah - I know it's a cover, but it's his version that really did it for me.
Pogues - Streams of Whiskey - hard to choose amongst so many good songs - the Broad Majestic Shannon is a favorite as well, but Streams of Whiskey is very indicative of what makes them fun, and how good the writing is too.
Led Zepplin - Stairway To Heaven - yeah, a classic, but what this song did to me in Jr. High...
Residents - Monkey and Bunny - one of the most uncomfortably twisted songs written. I love it, but it does make me uncomfortable.
Tom Waits - I Don't Wanna Grow Up - sums things up for me
Robyn Hitchcock - Aquarium - can't explain it - I just love it.
Stan Ridgway - Mission In Life - I'm very far removed from a Stan Ridgway or Wall of DooDoo fan, but this is one the best songs ever written. I reviewed his solo album for the radio station I was working at, and absolutely fell in love with this song. The rest of the album runs from bland to average.
Eels - Mr. E's Beautiful Blues - Hard to pick between this and Dirty Girl (if that is the title), but this one is more joyful. PS You Rock My World should probably be in the mix for first place, and you'll probably get a different result based on the day of the week.
They Might Be Giants - Certain People I Could Name - A strange little song about looking at very unpleasant things and recognizing a trait that someone they know has. I can't explain it, but I adore this song.
Loud Family - Motion of Ariel - Essentially a goodbye song from a band that never received the attention they definitely deserved. Beautiful with little touches of other sources, and one of the best lines in their career, as well as being a nod to Dr. Strangelove - "I can ride my intentions like Slim on the bomb."
A pretty slapdash list. I should make one each year and see what stays.

I'm with Cag. I have trouble defining a top ten. But tonight I'm in the mood to try, so this is totally off the top of my head. I'm trying to think of the various stage of my musical life and which bands influenced me a great deal.
Pogues - Fairytale of New York. Played to death I know, but I still love it!
Eels - oh I just don't know. Let's say Dirty Girl for now.
Paul Kelly - Every Fucking City. He has a multitude of amazing songs, but this one stuck in my mind now.
Tool - Aenima. A lot to choose from again, but I played this one to a pulp when it came out.
Sinead O'Connor - Daddy I'm Fine. She did an amazing version of Jealous on the local radio a few years ago. But Daddy I'm fine rocked me at the time.
They Might Be Giants - Till My Head Falls Off. This is a hard one, but this song is probably one of my most listened tracks. It has a sadness that a lot of TMBG tracks have, with catchy tunes.
George - Breathe in Now. The best female singer I have heard in a long time.
Pink Floyd - Brain Damage / Eclipse. A major influence as I grew up - I used to play it over and over at home much to my parents' disgust.
Nine Inch Nails - Hurt. There are so many I could choose here. The Fragile is one. But hurt is the one I can think of now. Nicely covered by Johnny Cash too!
Billy Joel - Scenes from an Italian Restaurant. Left field, I know! But once again, growing up, he had a large influence on my musical life, at the time...
