No worries. There's not really any definite way to tell.

However, grammatically speaking if you are unsure of someone's gender the approriate term is "him." You could also say "him or her," but such is most often far too cumbersome for any serious use.
Yes, I have read Strunk and White (i.e. The Elements of Style) far too much.
