My copy of Esslemont's Night of Knives arrived on Saturday and was dropped off at the neighbors. And is now safely in my hands!

Great day for me yesterday, picked up:

Day of the Triffids - Wyndham

Invasion of the Body Snatchers - Jack Finney

Proteus Unbound - Charles Sheffield

Brothers of the Head by Aldiss

Ambassador Without Credentials -- Strange format book of short stories by Sergei Snegov, translated from Russian.

Mission by Patrick Tilley. (IIRC, a story about Jesus returning to the modern world, and getting treated as a mental patient.)

And one other one that I can't remember right now either. Oh well. More books to lie around because I'm short of shelf space. :D

(Edited to fill in what I remembered to find out about them.)

Hey, that sounds like a good idea - I would enjoy doing a group read on a book I have not yet read...

The Stardragons by Bob Eggleton and John Grant, a stunning art book of paintings of dragons flying through outer space. There's text, too, but this is the sort of book one gets for the art, not the words. 8)

Used copies of the Ghormenghast (spelling?) books, and a little kids' fantasy series called The Dark is Rising Sequence by Susan Cooper. Also used copies of the two classic Frank Herbert Dune books I haven't read, Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse Dune.

Not familiar with The Dark Is Rising, but have read several of Susan Cooper's books, and enjoyed them all. Great sci-fi/fantasy for kids. :)

The Dark is Rising sequence is one of my favorite series of all time. I reread it at least once a year. It is a kid's series, being about a bunch of kids, but it's still a story about Good v. Evil in the very best style.

I'd even go so far as to say that in its own way, it's as powerful as LOTR. It's less grandiose--and definitely not as high-falutin'--but it, like LOTR, is a story about simple, honest people (who happen to be kids instead of hobbits) caught up in a fight that is much bigger and scarier and greater and more wonderful than anything they should really be exposed to. In other words, it's absolutely brilliant. I can't recommend it enough.

Wow. I'll have to look for it. Personally, I think there is a lot of great sci-fi/fantasy out there masquerading as children's books.

I frequently hit the childrens library to re-read some of the really good ones.

One of my favourite is a book called Earthseed by Pamela Sargent. If you see it, read it. It really is excellent.

Went ahead a pre-ordered Hal Duncan's forthcoming Vellium. Jeff VanderMeer has been praising it substantially and it sounds damn interesting.

Picked up Perdido Street Station. I'll be re-reading that probably after I finish re-reading Book of the New Sun.
