Heh, '1984' would be meaningless in such a format, mostly meaningless anyways. The female hero doesn't accomplish anything heroic, and you lose the her saving the him from a world where the hers have mostly been convinced that they shouldn't be kind at all to the hims. Yes it's fleshy, but the love in defiance of coolness is one of the bigger parts of the two main character's resistance. Likewise, while I think the bridge from the story to the ending of the story is a bit forced... removing the end altogether seems to take a great deal of the story away as well. Without the ending, and without the supression of their humanity, why exactly are they resisting big brother again?

Because some things need to be resisted?

(Been a long time since I read it, but I remember it as one of my favourite horror stories. )

You have to remember, I live in a country where a hundred/plus year old work is banned for accurately portraying the speech and vernacular of people of the day.
