Thanks, MM. Usually I'm right there with you in making fun of how Washingtonians cope with snow. But this kind of snow total would be a lot for just about anybody, I think.
And yeah, most of the localities around here have already blown through their snow-clearing budgets.
The NWS is now saying possibly 30 inches of snow.

matrixman wrote:A snowstorm dubbed "Snowmageddon" - not just major, but historically major - was heading to the U.S. capital on Friday, threatening to dump as much as 65 centimetres on a region that rarely gets more than a few dustings a year.
Not a flake had fallen from the sky, however, when schools in the city and its surrounding suburbs announced they were closing early, the mayor of D.C. declared a snow emergency, airlines cancelled flights, airports prepared to shut down and citizens raced to grocery and hardware stores to stock up on supplies.
The storm was said to be in contention to break the record posted by a 1922 blizzard that blew in off the Atlantic.
But a traditional D.C. winter doesn't normally result in anything more than a couple of snowfalls a year, amounting to rarely more than a sprinkling by Canadian standards. Consequently, the city and its suburbs in Virginia and Maryland don't allocate large portions of funds to snow removal, which means a major snowstorm is crippling.

For those of us used to big snowstorms, I guess it would be easy to say people in D.C. are overreacting.
Instead, I commend the city for taking this seriously and declaring it an emergency. Better safe than sorry.
Tell me about it. We get big storms in Ohio, and they still don't keep up the roads!...

Thanks for the advise Stone, and the laughs MM!
I'm feeling much more human today, so much so I did some housework!

My wording on my last post could have been misconstrued but it worked out in my favor. I meant to describe the cafe as the one that Lucimay and I hang out in and it inspired her to call me thinking we had a hanging out date so today, Saturday, at some point we are going to hang out in the cafe. I so love that. I am going to be working Sundays for the next few weeks so laundry day is off for Sunday.

how much so far? We are getting less (so far) than predicted.

I haven't been outside to measure it, but I can barely see my car... The apartment complex crew pulled out a little front-end loader to clear the snow awhile back. It worked for a pass or two -- and then got stuck. So they went back to the pickup with snowplow attachment. It was fun to watch.

Snow...I've heard of it. I've even touched it a couple of times.

30°C in Joburg today.

Have I mentioned that I dislike you, Av?
Spent about two hours this morning digging the car out. If it hadn't been for the kindness of a couple who were digging out *their* cars, I would still be at it. We got at least 20 inches here, and there was plow-wash piled up behind my car on top of the snow.
The snowcat is back, and is now scraping away the stuff that the plow left behind and/or didn't get to. The irony of this is not lost on me -- if I'd just waited a few hours, I could've saved myself two hours of physical labor. Oh well, I suppose I need the exercise....

Well...I'm human again! YAY! I'm almost all scabbed up so I think I'll be let out tomorrow! HOORAH! This is the ninth day I've been locked up here and I'm going stir crazy. Of course, SoS has announced he doesn't want me taking to him to school looking like "that" but my face is sort of looking normal again (apart from the fact I look like I've had a massive ache problem...boooohooooo!).
Anyway! I've got plans of NEVER having this again. Dumb stupid pox!

Well indeed. That's the one positive thing about chicken pox: once you've had it, you've had it. You can't get it a second time.

Convenient that way, yeah. Congrats on scabbing over, Sea!
So *now* the National Weather Service is predicting another storm for us on Tuesday night/Wednesday. Possibly another five inches of snow for us. I sure as hell hope they're wrong....
Oh, did I mention that I'm coming down with a cold?
The ONLY good thing about this coming week is that at the end of it, I will get two months off!

Ali, the idea is that all manner of plagues will descend on your city before the end of next week, giving you the perfect sendoff! Expect frogs to rain from the skies soon. Also, the first born of every Congressman may temporarily turn into a werewolf.

Yeah, the kid should talk...he's probably the one who gave it to ya, right? Isn't that one of the primary functions of children - passing all manner of germs to their hapless parental units?
Anyway, glad you're better. Nine days...that's basically a prison sentence. I've never stayed home for more than two days.

If any frogs fall from the skies here this week, MM, they'll freeze....
At least our office has seen reason and is allowing us to take administrative leave tomorrow (so we don't have to burn a vacation day if we can't make it in). Which is a good thing, as Metro won't be fully back up and running 'til Tuesday. Just in time for the next storm....

Actually, you *can* get it again...if you're unlucky!

Strange thing is, he hasn't had it. He's still got a little while to go before he's out of the woods (it's a 14 to 21 day incubation period I think). But he might be like me: when I was a kid every kid in my school got it except for me and my sis. There was only 25 of us in the school but, still. Seasis got it when she was about 23 and I was wondering when my time would come. Glad I've got it over and done with now though!
Good luck with the snow, Ali...and the frogs!

Now that you've gotten Chickenpox out of the way, you get to look forward to shingles! Coincidentally, I just found out that my Dad currently has a bad case of them.
Curse you, herpes zoster virus!

Hey ali! Did you get the term 'snowmaggedon' from Obama, or did he steal it from you?

Talked to my Dad yesterday, clear skies and not a drop of snow above NYC...

Heh. I was unlucky/weird enough to have them twice.

Both times when I was really young, though.
My big news is that I got my acceptance letter for Chico State University. It's not ivy league (

), but I was worried I wouldn't be let in because of budget cuts and whatnot. They're paring down the amount of transfer students they take. So I'll be entering as a Junior in the English Education major. Now I need to decide whether or not I should move to Chico. I can rent a room there and get a P/T job (probably no more than $8/9 hr) or I can rent a room up north in Redding/Anderson and commute to my classes (an hour and a half) and keep my P/T $13.50/hr job. It's complicated because I'd have to figure how much it'd cost to commute in gas and wear on the car and time....I just don't know yet. Any thoughts?

Is there a public transportation alternative to driving your car that is reasonable both in cost and time?

From here to Chico? No, I don't think so. It's pretty much farmland and I-5 all the way there.
