Hi Av

Did you get my added comment about clapping on landing?

Hahaha, no I didn't. Must say it's not something that is common here.
That said, the landing is definitely the most difficult bit of the whole process. With a couple hours of instruction, you yourself could get a light aircraft to take off.
It's the getting down that presents problems.

It was clear to anyone with eyes to see that the official figures in respect of net immigration into the UK were wildly adrift and it now apppears that this had as much to do with government mendacity in covering its true scale, as simple incompetance in respect of the recording system.
As a result of this chicanery, immigration has become the single deciding issue for a huge section of the UK populace in the forthcoming EU referendum. Should the populace vote to leave the EU it will be a salutary reminder to future governments that their job is to implement the mandate on which they achieved electoral victory and not to hoodwink the public by then persuing policies and intents on which they did not.

Thus my contention that democracy is a lie.

Once you've signed your power over to your candidate of choice, they basically do whatever they want with it until the next election. You effectively have no say at all in how a country is governed or administrated.

A letter sent to the
Financial Times from a Swiss-German citizen living in Zurich.
As a Swiss-german citizen this endless debate about the UK leaving the EU has become tiresome. Let the UK leave the EU and focus on what it does best; sell overpriced assets, ideas, lifestyle and remain the kleptocracy island of choice for oligarchs abroad

First post on a new notebook - always a bit of a pain getting to grips with a new machine but it has to be done now and again; couldn't even watch YouTube on the last one!

Nah, I always post like this.

True story. Others will post copiously on occasion, but Av is consistent over the long term. Others have had extended runs of near-omnipresence; Av clearly is not *always* here, but his presence and posting volume (admittedly sometimes just LOLs) is metronome-reliable.

A lady came into the shop late afternoon yesterday and came to the counter with 4 cans of beer and a bottle of wine. She requested 20 cigarettes from behind the counter and noting her stressed demeanour I said "Hard day?". She shuddered and replied in the affirmative that it had been a nightmare. As I took the payment for the items I couldn't help but notice the writing on the front of her polo shirt which read "Truro Health and Wellbeing Centre".

Sounds like she could use a little of what her own workplace offers.
Seriously, though, it's gotta be rough to work in any sort of caregiving situation. I don't know that I could do it for a living.

Well, in this case, the Truro Health & Wellbeing Innovation Centre is a business acceleration facility, according to their website.

No wonder she's stressed: this is Cornwall for feck's sake
Bad week for Women's soccer: the Australian National Woman's squad was beaten 7 - 0 by a local under 15's boys team.

We live in the age of ubiquitous hyperbole where everything is "Awsome!" and I'm a "Superstar" when I sell you ten grams of tobacco and a packet of rolling papers over the counter. I blame Bill and Ted, and while it amuses me more than anything I wonder what language will soon be left to describe the second coming or the likes of the worshipfull Bono (on which subject, don't be fooled if you see him walking down the street toward you - it's probably a fake. At a recent soiree with the pope or the dali lama or someone of appropriately exalted status for him to be seen with, some cad apparently nicked his trademark stetson, shades and cowboy boots leaving him in the embarrassing and potentially image destroying situation of having to return home in the lounge suite into which he had changed for the occasion).
