Excellent memory, indeed, shadowbingshoe! Between them, Terisa and Geraden broke seven mirrors. It's your question, and well done!

Wow, cool! :R

Continuing with the numerical theme, how many times was Terisa saved from a gruesome death by knight(s) in shining armour? (Madmen included)

I can only think of 2 off hand, once by Artegel and once by Havelock, but I feel there are more.

2 is happenstance. We're talking about Terisa. 8O

Let's see what I can remember....

The hallway after the meeting (Perdon and Kragen)
The first time in her room (Havelock, Argus, and Ribald)
The courtyard festival (Artagel)
The red furry things (Gereden, Argus, Ribald, and Nyle)
The King's Audience (Lebbick's last act)
Bad timing on Gart's Part (Eremis)
The Ghouls (Fayle)
The queen's kidnapping (Gereden again)

That's at least 8 clear cases.

Do we count the times there was general mayhem:
Artagel's second encounter with Gart?
The Wolf/Firecat attack at Houseldon?
Her own self-rescues?
- when she shifted the mirror to escape to the Closed Fist?
- when she shifted the mirror to her dungeon location?
- when she took out Eremis?

This brings us up to a minimum of 13.

And I'm sure I'm still missing something. Darn it, pretty much 3/4 of the story is her getting into trouble and being rescued by someone...

P.S. Egads more keep springing to mind -
The Champion shielding her from the rubble as he shoots his way out of the castle, and/or the conjury digging her out of the rubble
Quillon rescuing her from the jail cell
The Tor rescuing her from her initial arrest.

Good ones.

Maybe I was being too literal...people unexpectedly turning up when she was alone and threatened.

Some of those, she was already with the people/person who rescued her...

Yeah, I suspect Shoe just tossed out what he thought would be a relative softball, but I'm not sure we can come up with a sufficiently deterministic definition to get a single number, based on all of the times it has happened.

But maybe he did have a definition in mind?

Looks nervously around. :ct13: :ct14:  'What's the definition? What's the definition??'

My thinking is whenever Terisa is doomed until someone comes to her rescue. Simple enough, right?

All right, let's go over IrrationalSanity examples. that's a good way to clarify this:
IrrationalSanity wrote: Let's see what I can remember....

The hallway after the meeting (Perdon and Kragen)
agreed.
The first time in her room (Havelock, Argus, and Ribald)
of course.
The courtyard festival (Artagel)
ditto, though Geraen also bravely sort of helped. ;)
The red furry things (Gereden, Argus, Ribald, and Nyle)
a big one. The three foretold riders.
The King's Audience (Lebbick's last act)
I have a problem with this one because Terisa wasn't saved. She was kidnapped as planned. The Tor was saved. Also Congery members. But Eremis got his prize.
Bad timing on Gart's Part (Eremis)
What?
The Ghouls (Fayle)
Yes.
The queen's kidnapping (Gereden again)
I don't remember exactly. Did he defend her or from the raiders or calmed her frantic horse?

That's at least 8 clear cases.

Do we count the times there was general mayhem:
Artagel's second encounter with Gart?
You mean when the roaches almost ate them? The attack was aimed against Geraden but if Artagel and more importantly Havelock didn't help they'd both be dead. Also, Geraden and Terisa were constantly together so it's likely she'd die even if she didn't go to the lower levels. So I counted this one.
The Wolf/Firecat attack at Houseldon?
No. This is general mayhem. Though who knows how good communications between Eremis group and the wolves+firecats are. I seem to remember they locked eyes with Terisa? Maybe Eremis gave them Terisa's dirty undies to sniff. So... possibly?
Her own self-rescues?
- when she shifted the mirror to escape to the Closed Fist?
agreed. she did this on her own so it doesn't count.
- when she shifted the mirror to her dungeon location?
This one does though. She made it possible, but someone else needed to translate her out of trouble.

- when she took out Eremis?
as you say. The only one helping her there was Eremis ginormous narcissism.

And I'm sure I'm still missing something. Darn it, pretty much 3/4 of the story is her getting into trouble and being rescued by someone...
Tru dat.
P.S. Egads more keep springing to mind -
The Champion shielding her from the rubble as he shoots his way out of the castle, and/or the conjury digging her out of the rubble
Yes I counted those (as two).
Quillon rescuing her from the jail cell

And this one!
The Tor rescuing her from her initial arrest.
Maybe. She wasn't in danger of death that time.

xxxx

There's at least one more life and death rescue and two, possibly three figurative/emotional deaths you didn't mention.

Well, we've got the furry spider pacman things in the courtyard, but I didn't originally count that because she walked into it eyes wide open, with help just for the occasion.

Gereden "rescuing" her from her old life?

Havelock pulling both she and Gereden back from the dinner party?

The "rescue" I attributed to Eremis was (IIRC) in his chamber. He was seducing Terisa (or trying, but being interrupted) Gart popped in, but there were witnesses I think, so Eremis threw a pillow at him, which let him know that this wasn't a good time.

You mean when she shattered a glass from afar? I forgot about that one. I think it shouldn't count.
Gereden "rescuing" her from her old life?
Yes. That's one of the metaphorical deaths I thought about.
Havelock pulling both she and Gereden back from the dinner party?
Maybe. If he didn't, I figure they could lead a good life in our world even if Mordant fell as a result. Maybe they'll become missionaries in third world countries with Reverend Thatcher?

Ah. Was it really a coincidence though? Or did Eremis stage it all for his joke hero persona? I bet he laughed his ass off humiliating Artagel (and Gart) by defeating best swordsman with pillows.

(still one more from each category.)

In any case, you're correct. I'm 100% male.

Shoe,

You realize, of course, that in the process of vetting all of this we're really killing off a whole line of potential Trivia Game questions...

It's all for THE CAUSE (of answering this question!) ;)

Edit to add - you're in the finish line already. Break the ribbon.

I think I'm pretty much tapped out. Over all, I don't think I did too bad for not having read the books in several years. We've already got a couple apparent forfeits. Any others I try get hazy around the edges - for example, did the servant who taught her checkers ever save her from the closet? Those kinda blur together for me, but I don't think so.

Oh, the Servant! Forgot about him. From what I recall he wasn't a house servant. Maybe a gardener or a chauffeur? He was her only childhood friend so that must count for something.

After you recounted so many I'll give you hints:

- Life&death rescue happened in 2nd book during her travels.

- metaphorical one (though in retrospect could be a life&death) happened in 1st book and was hilarious.
