What's the difference between donating without a note and donating anonymously?

When you click on the Donate link, the page that opens has a place to put however many of whichever currency you are donating, and then a big blank window to enter a message to the recipient if you want. If you enter a message, a note is definitely sent to the recipient that you donated the currency to them.

But, I know I have received donations without being notified. But, I don't know how it works. I'm almost positive when I donate currency to someone a PM is automatically generated. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the sender goes into their Outbox after donating, and deletes the PM notifying me of their donation before I read it...

If you don't enter a message, is the receiver of the donation definitely not notified?

That's what we're trying to figure out.
I don't think it's definite. As I said, I've donated without a note, and I'm pretty sure a PM was generated anyway. Unless that was only for when I bought and donated an item, instead of WGDs. It is so confusing, at least to me...

I think I thanked you once, didn't I? I seem to remember we discussed this before.

If I am notified, I always thank the person.

But, I hardly ever receive notification, which is why I make it a point to post thanks on the board when I do notice my WGD count has gone up quicker than expected.

IIRC, the one time you thanked me you mistook me for someone else.
I've never left messages with any of my donations.
No one has thanked me (and had it really be me they intended to thank), so I assume they were all anonymous, as I intended them to be.

Have you ever checked your outbox right after making a donation? If a notifying PM was generated, a copy should appear in your outbox until the recipient reads it, then it will go into your sent box...

Nope, nothing in the sent box related to donations, so I guess my method for donating anonymously is working.
Except now everyone knows that I donate anonymously.
Drat.
