Poor Jenn! Retail sucks in a lot of ways, I'm told. |G

SJ -- good for your little guy! :)

So, ali's tale of woe today: We had a line of Armageddon-ish thunderstorms roll through yesterday afternoon around 3pm. Our power went out, naturally, and it's likely not coming back on soon. About a half-block from our apartment building, a power pole with a transformer on top snapped in half, and the transformer is now lying on the ground -- wires down and everything. The crews were out there early this morning but I can't imagine they'll be able to fix it soon.

Magickmaker and I went out to dinner last night. I woke up at about 3:30 this morning, thinking, "Damn, I should've bought some ice last night while we were out -- duh!" So I got up early this morning, took a shower in cold water (sort of an upright sponge bath, actually 8O), and went out to get a bag of ice. Finally found some at a grocery store. Came home, put it in the freezer, loaded up the freezer with as much (warm) stuff from the fridge as would fit, left for work, and missed my bus by about 30 seconds so I had to drive in.

Luckily I hadn't gone to the store, so the fridge started out pretty bare....

SJ, that is awesome!

ali, ugh.
I saw Magickmaker's Facebook comments regarding being out of power, but didn't see what had caused it. I agree; sounds like it is a good thing you haven't shopped yet.

Beorn says the assessment was easy, but it looks like competition for the position is pretty fierce. They offered the assessment at two different times; the same thing for the assessment for the other page position as well. He said 17 applicants were at this assessment. We can only assume an equal number will be at the others.

He's hoping he'll at least be invited to interview for one of the two positions. Out of 80 or so applicants for two positions though, I told him to not be disappointed if he isn't.

One step at a time though, eh?

I feel beat up today. About two hours into work I bent my pointer finger on my left hand backwards in a very painful way and now there is a hard swollen sore lump at the palm side base of my finger. Then about half an hour later I NAILED my funnybone. Had to sit on the floor in the receiving area for five minutes before I could seem to breathe, then later I skinned my shin misjudging the angle/distance that the pallet would fall. Unfortunately I didn't compensate for the potential of it snagging on the pallet beneath. I didn't file a report on the finger because I'm icing it, except when typing to see if the swelling goes down. If it's not better by tomorrow morning I'll file an incident report since I have 24 hours. I have full movement in it although it's tender. The lump is an odd thing, it's swollen all over the front base pad part of the palm, if I am looking at my palm it's the small section at the top of the palm below the finger but the hard lump is right at the joint and it kinda slides around under the skin if you push on it, almost like a tendon out of place or something. The lump is all the way across the base of the joint and it's about 1/4 inch in diameter. Anyone have any ideas? I know I didn't break it but I'm wondering if it's possible to bruise the joint like that? If I press the lump down from the joint towards the palm of my hand I get a shooting pain about a third of the way up my forearm, inner wrist facing me puts it at the outer/left edge of my inner arm right where I have a big vein but underneath the big vein.... I should have paid more attention in anatomy class.

wow, what a day! I would guess you may have pulled a ligament. I would get it checked either way. You don't want it to heal badly. Too much depends on that index finger . If you didnt have your left index finger how would you type cvbgftr? Life would become meaningless. No more online movie theatre recipes for -otton -andy and -ienna -ingers -overed wi-h -utter and -hocolate.

And btw, that funny bone is no joke :(

Go to the doc, Jenn. |G

The rest of my tale of woe is not quite so woeful. Magickmaker hoofed it over to Starbucks yesterday for their free wi-fi and mad electronic-device-charging skillz. ;) So she was fine for the day.

When I got home, the power was still out, but I noticed a big table with pizza boxes and sandwich trays in the middle of the lobby. The management had bought dinner for us! That was really nice of them. The manager also told us that the power company was promising to restore power by 10pm. So Magickmaker and I hauled ourselves upstairs (have I mentioned I live on the 8th floor?) and waited. Needless to say, 10pm passed and the lights were still out. A disgruntled ali gave up around 11:30 and went to sleep. Woke up around 3am feeling...cool. Looked up at the ceiling fan, which was on. Rolled out of bed, trundled over to the open window and peered out at the gigantor a/c unit for the whole building (which sits right under our window and makes one heck of a racket when it starts up -- you almost can't hold a conversation with the windows open when it's running) and said, "Bubba, is that you? Are you on?" And then I felt cool air blowing up from the radiator under the window. So I joyously shut all the windows and turned off the lights that were on, then went back to bed.

This morning -- light switches work! Hot water comes out of the faucet! The stove burners no longer need to be lit by a match! And all the stuff from the fridge that I'd iced down in the freezer is frozen!

Yeah, you should get it looked at, Jenn.

Nothing too exciting to report. The heat broke, but it was never as bad up here as it was even 200 miles to the south. I'd wanted to go to the beach over by Lake Geneva today, but the day is overcast. So, I'm here typing instead. Well, I could clean, but I don't really want to right now.

I've been trying to get in touch with a college friend from CT to see a movie in NYC and maybe go to the Rubin Museum, but we haven't gotten in touch yet. Hopefully won't have to play phone-tag or nothing.

I filed an incident report so that if I decide to have it looked at later it's still on record. It's not as tender this evening and I babied it at work somewhat. I also bought a water from the extremely cold cooler and used it to "ice" my hand then swapped it out, never opening it so that I kept icing it during the day and it's a lot less painful for certain movements that it was before. I can fully flex out my hand without it having sharp pains, its a bit of a dull ache now instead. Before it had sharp pains during certain movements but now it only has sharp pains if you press directly on the lump. I'm gonna give it another day or two and if it's still bothering me I'll go have it looked at.

I had a lot of fun at work today. I was teasing Edward in a silly way right after getting in to work so it put him in a silly mood which apparently is very rare. He asked me to back him on something and my response was, "Oh heck no, if she asks I'm telling her, he split ten minutes after you left today and then showed back up a few hours later with his eyes all bloodshot and smelling kinda smokey and skunky and then bought up all the cheetos in the store and went into the office, not really sure what's up with that." He was looking at me like, "What the hell?" and then busted out laughing and said, "That was just cold, Jenn, so totally cold." I laughed and said, "It's fun in theory but the reality is that of course I have your back, Ed. You don't even have to ask me." Shortly after that I was again checking in with Edward on some stuff to get done and Cheng walked up behind Edward and I immediately switched gears and said, "And something really has to be done about Cheng and her attitude, did you know she threatened to poke me in the eye last night? Granted I was confessing that I was the one messing up all the "kooky pompom pens" in the impulsive buy alley at the registers, but seriously, she is so violent and mean." He got it right away and said, "Yeah we really don't need employees with her attitude bringing the other employees down. I think we should just fire her." Cheng was totally grinning and says, "Yeah, definitely fire that Cheng girl, she's serious bad news." I was told by three people that they had never seen him joke around or be playful before. Just after that, Edward asked me to do a sales update and I said ok and headed up front to get the numbers and when I got there I got kidnapped by a customer and then Kristen asked me to get her some pennies for the register. I said I would get the pennies as soon as I was done with the customer and then finished with the customer and had forgotten the pennies so I started back in with the sales update and Kristen interrupted me asking me if I forgot her pennies. I admitted I did and then started walking back to the office to get her pennies. As I walked back I got on the walkie and said, "Ed, I am going to be a bit more delayed on the sales update because Kristen told me to get her some pennies right now or else and you know how intimidating she can be so let me get the pennies and then I'll get you the update, I promise." Just so you guys know, Kristen is about 80 pounds soaking wet and a very petite pretty girl with a very sweet, gentle and innocent personality, I think it's a side effect of being 18. Edward gets on the mike and says, "Yes I do, she scares me all the time so I can relate, go get the pennies, the sales update can wait." Cheng actually asked me later what I did to Edward because he was really fun to work with today and I can't remember who told that when we were teasing Kristen she busted up laughing on the register and had to explain to the customer that her managers were being silly and teasing her on the headset. Apparently the customer thought that was cool and told Kristen she had a great smile and laugh. It set off a nice lighthearted mood with the entire crew and when Tyrone came back from lunch he said, "This is the Captain speaking, I am now back on deck, back on deck." So Mary pipes in with, "I hope we aren't on the Titanic." and I say, "Oh man, I was all excited thinking we were on a spaceship and I was gonna ask to be the Science Officer." That sparked off a round of people wanting various spaceship titles so I assigned everyone a spaceship job. Even Edward wanted a spaceship job so I made him the pilot. I had assigned Cheng to be the chief medical officer because she's in nursing school and she joked that she let her cpr certs lapse so I made her the ship's mechanic. Then later on she and I were in the back breaking down the cardboard and this huge hairy spider crawled out of a box and she squished it. It was big enough that it made an audible pop under her shoe. Ugh. She was a bit wigged out too even though she killed the thing and we looked at each other with big huge wide eyes and then I kept eye contact with her and got on the walkie and said, "Everyone, Cheng has just been promoted to Head of Security, Weapons and Defense because we were just attacked by a huge eight legged hairy alien in the cargo bay and she was like a ninja saving my life as it leapt for my jugular vein. I repeat, Cheng is now head of Security, Weapons and Defense for saving my life." We kept up the spaceship motif for quite a few walkie conversations and it was quite amusing and then at the end of the day I got on and said, "This is your science officer Jenn signing out for the day, It was a pleasure traveling time and space with this crew tonight, nice work and I look forward to our next voyage on the USS ODprise, Mary, you have the bridge."

I'm tired. We were busy today and I got nothing of my own chores done because I was stuck in the copy center and/or on register all day. I got a bunch of rewards cards signed up and I always forget to write my name on them and so later when I was entering some in the system, I realized that Cheng had written Jennipoo on all of my cards. Normally I would hate that but today I just found it amusing. I ran into one of the parts guys from BMW today, he came in to get some stuff laminated. He got laid off a year ago and is now working for Discount Parts Warehouse. I found that depressing.

Day off today, wife has some "jobs" for me. i.e. housework :hairs:

Also waiting for some bunk beds to be delivered - wish they would hurry up and arrive so I can get down to assembling them.

Had hoped to play a bit of golf today, but the weather, the housework and waiting in for a delivery have conspired against me - oh well, early shift this week, so could be out golfing some afternoons this week, if the weather improves.

Summer in Scotland, you've got to love it. (or have some really good waterproofs  )

Woke up a couple of hours ago to a big storm going through. Continuous lightning. Managed after an hour to go back to sleep for the last 45 min before the alarm.

I've got Tuesday off too, but I'll be taking my mom to doctor's offices for a couple of appointments as a preliminary to cataract surgery next week.

 Well, I'm going to Eels the band.

Probably go to the zoo too, and the acquarium, and the movies, and there's a good mini-golf place that I'm thinking of. Perhaps an AFL (football) game or an A-league (soccer) game on the weekend.

You and Jack are going to have a blast in Melbourne!

So Eve and Lilly will have some girly-bonding time while y'all are away? Sounds win-win to me!
In case you have access issues while in Melbourne, please wish Jack a Happy Birthday for me on Friday. :hearts:

So, finally, the bunk beds arrived - however, life is not always a straight line.

Having spent the best part of 2 hours putting them together, I unwrap a mattress and throw it on the top bunk, only to discover that the mattresses delivered (as a bundle with the bed) are the wrong size - too big for the bed.

To say I was a tad annoyed might be an understatement - one phone call later to the bed company and we're waiting for a call back so they can sort out their mistake and deliver the correct mattresses - bet they don't get back to us until tomorrow, which will mean a two day wait until they're delivered.

Oh well, what doesn't kill you.........................................
