Baited breath or bated breath? The latter is usually what is meant, being an aphesis of the proper term "abated breath"; that one is holding one's breath in anticipation.
On the other hand, baited breath suggests something along the lines of a specialized form of halitosis. There are those who might think this could be linked to the Diet of Worms, but that is actually an entirely different topic, best discussed in The Close.

I have to say a joke that includes a fad, history, theology, pun, and malaprop at the same time is worthy indeed.

Well, I have to get rid of these white gold dollars.

Survivor: Isle of the One Tree
Five contestants will compete against each other, through successive rounds of elimination, until only one contestant remains. They battle for cash and prizes totalling more than 11,000 WGD.
Each round, contestants will strive to complete their task more successfully than their fellow contestants. Each round, the Staff of Immunity will be awarded by the host somewhat randomly. Each round, the audience will vote off one of the contestants. The last contestant not voted off the Island wins.
The winner will receive the 10,000 WGD first place prize. The runner up will receive $1,000 WGD. Third place: 100 WGD; fourth: 10; last and
totally least: 1.
- - - - -
The five contestants will earn their way into the game through a grueling and humiliating process of initiation called "Donaldson Karaoke". Anyone can compete; five will win.
The Rules
- Start with the lyrics of a song. (It will help if people recognize the song.)
- Change the lyrics just a little bit, to include the target words.
- The lyrics must still make some sort of sense.
- The more target words you use, the more points you get. Double points for some words.
- You are allowed to make other little changes so that the lyrics make sense, but the less the better.
- You are also allowed to change the form of the target words, with no penalty. E.g. evanescence, orogenic, or curiosities.
- Post your Donaldson Karaoke lyrics to enter the contest.
Target Words
chiaroscuro
curiosity
desuetude
evanescent
inchoate
mansuetude
orogeny
puissant
roynish
unambergrised :
double points
Here's a lame but valid example on an entry:
- There's a lady who's sure all that's evanescent is gold
And she's buying a stairway to desuetude.
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are inchoate
With puissance she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to desuetude.
When all the entries are in, the five winners will be chosen based on how good their lyrics are, how many target words were used, how seemlessly they've been inserted, humor, wit, lobbyist influence, and audience participation.
These five winners will win entry into the Survivor: Isle of the One Tree main event, where they are guaranteed to win
something.

Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, an unambergrised quip;
That started with a paid phone bill, sent to a roynish git;
This mate had a chiaroscuro-like soul, inchoate rage-imbued
three fingers on his wedding hand, he lacked mansuetude, he lacked mansuetude;
[crack of thunder and Foul laughing]
he fell in front of a siren car, ochre evanescent in his thoughts,
his humanity in desuetude, he fell onto the Watch, he fell onto the Watch
he wandered ‘round the Land for a while, with puissant frenemies--
like Haruchai, and Council lords, an angry man – with a knife
Horsey-stars;
A giant man, and Atiaran
Here in the Despiser’s gaol!

Remember when you were young,
puissant like the sun.
Evanesce on you
inchoate diamond
Now there's a look in your eyes, like
roynish holes in the sky.
Evanesce on you
inchoate diamond.
You wer caught in the
desuetude of childhood and stardom
Blown on the steel breeze.
come on you target for faraway laughter
come on you stranger, you
unambergrised martyr, and shine.
You reached for
mansuetude, you cried for the moon.
Evanesce on you
inchoate diamond.
Chiaroscuroed by shadows at night, and exposed in the light
Evanesce on you
inchoate diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with
curious precision
Rode on
orogeny
Come on you
Raver, you
seer of visions,
come on you painter you piper you prisoner and shine.
[I hope for bonus points for the extra SRD bolded words in penultimate line.

[in case this is unrecognizable...
sung to Led Zepplin's The Immigrant Song
pronunciation and meter chosen per dictionary.com]
A-ah-ahh-ah, ah-ah-ahh-ah
We come from the land of inchoate snow
from puissant sun chiaroscuro
The curiosity desuetude evanescent
Unambergrised, we sing and cry, “Sarangrave, I am coming!”
On we sweep with, with threshing oar
Our only goal will be the roynish shore
Ah-ah-ahh-ah, ah-ah-ahh-ah
We come from the land of inchoate snow
from puissant sun chiaroscuro
Mansuetude fields, so green
can whisper tales of gore, of how we hid the words of lore
We are your overlords
On we sweep with, with threshing oar
Our only goal will be the roynish shore
So now you better stop and rebuild all your ruins
The Oath of Peace shant win the day because of all you're losin'
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ahh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh

Other than the "ah-ahhs" and "oh-ohhs", I never knew what they were saying in that song anyway...

That's what lyric sheets are for.
At least the syllables for each line match up...

Syllables are important
(At least I think so)

In the day we sweat it out in the fields of an inchoate weather scene
At night we ride on coursers of horror like suicide machines
Sprung from cages out of revelstone,
weird horned, roynish skinned and steppin out over the line
Linden this land rips the bones from your back
Its a death trap, it's a desuetude rap
We gotta get out while were young
Unambergrised, hey Linden we were born to run
Linden let me in I wanna be your friend
I want to guard your chiaroscuro visions
Just wrap your legs round these puissant rims
And strap your hands across my white gold
Together we could break time's trap
We'll run till we drop, Linden we'll never go back
Will you walk with me out at Glimmersmere
`cause baby Im just a scared and lonely rider
Curiosity for just how it feels
I want to know white gold is wild, girl I want to know the Land is real
Beyond the mayhem the gorgons pound hard down from the palace walls
The giants try to counter puissant against the ravers
but the Ravers seem to come down hard
The Arch of Time rises bold and stark
Jeherrin huddled in the cave in a mist
I wanna die with you Linden on Mt. Thunder tonight
In an evanescent kiss
Revelstone's jammed with broken heroes on an orogenous puissant drive
Everybodys out on the run tonight but there's no place left to hide
Together Linden well live with the mansuetude
Ill love you with all the madness in my soul
Someday girl I don't know when were gonna get to the arch
Where we really want to go and we'll walk in the sun
But till then tramps like us baby we were born to run

Unambergrised like a dog for the boss man
Unambergrised for the inchoate
I'm bettin' on the evanessent
I'm gonna have an orogency
But where am I puissant
They tell me that desuetude
Mansuetude a girl like an open book
Roynish between the lines
Love in a chiaroscuro
Curiosity I'm going down
Love in a chairoscuro
Curiosity I'm going down

…And the dAN lies down in Andelain
Early morning Kevin’s Watch,
Ocean winds blow on the land.
The chiaroscuro is now undone,
The all-night watchers have had their fun.
Sleeping cheaply on the midnight show,
It's the same old ending-time to go.
Get out!
It seems they cannot leave their dream.
There's something inchoate in the sidewalk steam,
And the dAN lies down in Andelain.
Nightime's flyers feel their pains.
Drugstore takes down the chains.
Orogeny comes in bursts,
But the gas station can quench that thirst.
Curiosity cracked on unambergrised road
The trucker's eyes read 'Overload'
And out on the subway,
Cail Imperial evanescent Kid
Exits into daylight, puissance hid,
And the dAN lies down in Andelain.
The dAN seems right out of place,
Yet the Andelain scene finds mansuetude in its face.
Somehow it's lying there,
Brings desuetude to the air.
Though man-made light, at night is very bright,
There's no whitewash victim,
As the neons dim, to the coat of white.
Cail Imperial evanescent Kid
Wipes his gun-he's forgotten what he did,
And the dAN lies down in Andelain.
Menolly tired, her work all done,
Thinks money-honey-be on-neon.
Wayfriend's velvet glove sounds the horn
And the roynish king spits out his scorn.
Wonder women draw your blind!
Don't look at me! I'm not your kind.
I'm Cail!
Something inside me has just begun,
Lord knows what I have done,
And the dAN lies down in Andelain.
In Andelain-
They say the wights are always bright in Andelain.
They say there's always magic in the air.

I hope I make the cut...I thought we were supposed to change as little as possible, not do "Odes to the Land" mods. Still...very fun stuff, peeps.
