well is there anty dragonlance fans in here if so theres is a new core book out a must for us Dragonlance fans

Been years since I read a Dragonlance book, but I might just pick one up again.

Haha, I've found that people, especially people here, tend to deride them as "fluff."

I'm not ashamed to say ( ) that they were some of my first forays into fantasy, and that I've read and enjoyed many of them, and of their authors other books too for that matter.

That said, I won't rush out to buy this one, but if it should come my way, I'll definitely give it a try.

Fluff, perhaps, but enjoyable fluff all the same.

Which is what they are. They add nothing to the genre as a whole, or to knowledge.

Never read any dragon lance myself...but when aquaintences find out that I do read fantasy, they're astonished that I never have.

Of course I'm not going to say DL is grand literature, but wether it adds to knowledge or not greatly depends upon the individual reader, doesn't it?

I know a bunch of people who got introduced to the genre through Dragonlance, and if it or any part of it expands anyone's horizon... it has some worth. More than fluff.

I was introduced to fantasy through DL too - up until that point I didn't like it (I still kind of don't). But I was just expressing my opinion.

I agree with you wholeheartedly on this Loremaster but, that doesn't mean the books still aren't worthwhile.

Considering fiction only:

Why do you read? I read for enjoyment, pure and simple. Have been ever since I read The Cat In The Hat on my own in 1st grade. There hasn't been a period in my life since where there hasn't been a book in progress. Sometimes a repeat but usually not.

I'll take a wild guess here and say on average I read 1 to 2 books per week. At age 51, that's alot of books I've read through the years. If I happen to pick up a book that adds to my perspective or teaches me something along the way, well, that's just gravy.

I could probably count on both hands, the books I have finished and felt like I have just read something...."special". Lord Foul's Bane was one of those.

Very few books really add anything to their particular "genre as a whole or to knowledge", but, they provide me with enjoyment which makes them worthwhile.

Just my take.

Excellent posts Ducky and Sev. While I certainly have no problem admitting that they are not literary masterpieces, they more than adequately fulfill the purpose of any book. They can be an enjoyable read.

Of course you don't have to like them Lore, but even if their worth lies only in introducing people (like you ) to the potentials of fantasy or sci-fi, then they have some worth.

They're fun, easy reads. Cliched even perhaps. They don't claim to be any more than that though.

For fantasy by the same authors, I prefer the Darksword books...noticeably less cliched. And Weiss turned out a pretty good sci-fi / space opera series too, Star of the Guardians that I read every now and then. Both better than DL I think.
