I have not read this trilogy, but Beorn, my 12 year old, has really enjoyed them.

Rincewind, try Paul Kearney's Monarchies of God.

It's epic fantasy, set in a Renaissance level world, great characters, heavy on the plausible historical background, lighter on the magical side of things, similar to George R. R. Martin's approach.

It's a completed series of five books, all out in mass market paperback. First book - Hawkwood's Voyage.
