No card-carrying Floyd fan is without a copy of Meddle and Animals. Meddle is where they really started coming into bloom, small traces of Dark Side looming in their music. It should be noted that Animals is my second favorite Floyd album, after Wish You Were Here.

Momnetary Lapse of Reason is a good choice as well. I really like Division Bell too. Of course I lucked out, my brother bought me the box set so I have all of Floyd's studio albums.

Give The Delicate Sound Of Thunder a try...
You won't be disappointed. (It is a live recording)
If you buy some "pre-Dark Side" material,
it is quite different than what you may expect.
It is considered their "experimental" stage.

I'd go with PULSE before going with Delicate Sound of Thunder. I think it's a better live recording, personally. From the 1994 Division Bell tour. Plus, the second disc has the Dark Side of the Moon live.
And try their 70s stuff before their post-Waters albums. I like Division Bell, don't get me wrong, but it can't compare with their 70s material. Momentary Lapse of Reason is probably their weakest album, but, again, that's just me.

LF is right about PULSE. (I forgot about that one. )
I don't have a tape of CD of PULSE, but I do have the video.
(Does the CD version have the blinking light on the box?..
or is that on the box set ECHOES?)

I forgot to mention their latest: The Wall Live 1980-81. That's probably my favorite live thing of theirs, as it has the whole band (including Waters). Plus, the Wall was kind of meant to be heard live, and this live version is superior in many parts to the studio version. A definite must-buy for those who want to hear Floyd live and at their peak.

Pigs on the Wing 1 and 2.
Short and sweet. It is one of my favorites
Pink Floyd - Pigs On The Wing Lyrics
If you didn't care what happened to me,
And I didn't care for you,
We would zig zag our way through the boredom and pain
Occasionally glancing up through the rain.
Wondering which of the buggars to blame
And watching for pigs on the wing.
---- and watching...... for pigs on the wings....
ahh... deeply moving
When i was in the air force we used to get really buzzed drinking beer, and we would sit around listening to Pink Floyd. When ever the Pigs on the Wings songs would come on it would just get... I can't describe it.

Waters was the visionary of the themes,
but Gilmour's guitar made a big influence in the
mood of the songs. (Although Waters sure ain't no slouch neither!)
Both very talented men with what they do.
Richard Wright's spacey keyboard playing makes
the backround sounds that whisk you mind away.
Nick's drums set the tempo that almost beat with your heart.

There was a long discussion on the echoes mailing list a few years ago how PF achieved that flowing kind of sound it's so characteristic with their 69-77 period. The agreement was that they have this unique feature that Waters hits his chords a tiny bit after the beat whereas Mason hits the drums a tiny beat before the beat, thus creating that mellow flow of music. Add to that Wright's multiple layers of organ and soft piano play and Gilmour's eerie guitar and there's perfect ambient for you.

My older sister had Dark Side on LP and she played it to death. I was a pretty small child then and just didn't like it, in fact some of the steel guitar used to creep me out. Then a couple of years ago I was listening to a friend's band play in Memphis and they started to play this really cool and familiar song that almost drove me crazy before I realized what it was and where it was from - it was "Time." About 2 weeks later, as fate would have it, I was in a used CD store and found Dark Side in a milk crate full of otherwise crappy CDs. Somebody sure didn't know what they had. Since then I've bought ABITW, but that's all that I have.
David Gilmour is one of my favorite guitarists of all time!

Yeah Foul I recently bought Animals - and it truly is amazing. Every song is just...great. Dogs is possibly my favorite Pink Floyd song - better even than Shine On You Crazy Diamond. It's really an amazing album and possibly my favorite by them.Lord Foul wrote:No card-carrying Floyd fan is without a copy of Meddle and Animals. DOGS and SHEEP are my favorite pix from that LP.

As Gilmour has proven with his solo work, he knows perfectly well how to make the Pink Floyd sound without Waters. But that doesn't make it either innovative or catchy. As much as I love the Division Bell, stacking it beside their 70s material makes it look really, really dull. At least to my ears.
Then again, I'm more of a Waters guy than a Gilmour guy. Without Waters there'd be no Wish You Were Here, no Dark Side, and definitely no Animals or Wall. Sure, maybe those records still could've existed somehow--just not the way we know them today. And most likely not as popular or as timeless.

Gilmour's an immenseley talented musician and guitarist, but his lyrics are in no way better than Waters'. Most of Gilmour's lyrics are alright, but I cannot stand the lyrics from the song Sorrow.Zakari wrote:Personally - PF became worth listening to when Waters got lost and left the other three to do the music...
So he wrote the lyrics - DG's are just as good, and they played better without Waters' ego-trip control...
I have the two DG solo albums...really good - anyone else?
