I dunno. To me, Jack's funny in very small doses, though admittedly he was the best thing in King Kong.

Jack Black can't do a thing wrong in my opinion. He stole the show in Hi-Fidelity, and I love Tenacious D.

Speaking of which, has anybody else heard the live improv version of Spiderman? It's as crude as a song will get, (as near as I can determine, it's musical commentary of gay porn), but I've never laughed so hard in my life as when I first heard it.

He was even pretty good in Day of the Jackle and Enemy of the State.. (oh yah, those were small roles...)

Tenacious D is great. I also like Jack Black in King Kong....but his comedy can wear thin after a while. School of Rock was a perfect vehicle for him, but Shallow Hal sucked enormously!

God, I love this movie! We got it on DVD for our son, and let him open early. We've watched it 4 times in the last 2 days!! It's comic genius. Really, this is Jack Black's magnum opus. He co-wrote, co-produced the movie, did all the singing (fantastic job, btw!), and co-wrote the very ba-dass music. :)

There are so many cool and original ideas being performed here. The mock-musical format is carried through right to the end's hilarious "showdown." I didn't realize going into this movie that it was a "musical," with characters busting out in song right in the middle of scenes as part of the dialogue and plot progression. I usually hate musicals, but this one couldn't have been done any other way. Mock rock indeed. I loved how it simultaneously made fun of 80's rock excess and still managed to kick ass at the same time. Honestly, the music is great--often better than the 80s stuff it parodies.

The scene where JB is breaking into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the soundtrack is describing in great detail every silly action he is doing on screen, is something I've never seen before. Breaking down the subliminal wall between soundtrack and onscreen performance . . . I loved it!

All the songs are hilarious. JB's dream sequence (not the sasquatch shroom trip) is classic in its exaggerated campiness. "I did not mean/to blow your mind/that shit happens/all the tiiiii---iiiii--iiiime!" :rockband:

But the songs are good, too. They fuckin' rock! I had no idea JB could sing so well. His brand of demented, over-the-top, exhibitionism suits the character of an aspiring rock frontman.

If you like Spinal Tap, Monty Python, 80s rock, drug jokes, and--oh yeah--Jack Black--you'll love this movie. It's his masterpiece.
