i must say, that i cant stand the paper they use in some novels, i recently bought Ilium, a good book so far, but the paper they used in it was thick, and made the book impossible to carry around in a jean pocket
in contrast, the paper used in the del rey printing of "guns of the south" is incredible, almost 600 pages and less than an inch thick
just felt that i needed to rant, i didnt expect to not be able to carry my book around when i bought it
also, welcome back to me, i havent posted in months!

Welcome back!
My rant? I hate how the binding glue isn't very strong in big, thick paperbacks. I have several paperbacks that I had to re-attach covers onto because the glue was weak and the cover lost adhesion during normal reading. And I'm quite gentle on books too. . .

I hear that Lyr, although I'm not
that gentle on them. At least, until the pages strat coming out.
Oh, and welcome back RW.

I think Rincewind should realize that while they suffer from inferior quality, paberbacks are a cheaper alternative to the much more popular paperback.

Oh, I forgot about cheap glue, so your book falls apart on the first reading!

All of my Robert Jordan paperbacks had that happen!

I remember that at one time you could send a complaint to Tor and they'd give you a refund, I think? That was years ago, so I don't remember all the details. . .

I used to catalog books for alibris.com. Paperbacks don't last; they're not supposed to. They generally have no collector value. They're meant to be consumed and on the cheap (they are called 'mass-market paperbacks'). I've seen a lot of old Conan books, sci-fi pulps. Don't think I ever saw one that wasn't in the $5 bin. The binding and paper makes them pretty much unreadable after 50 years, and though there's been improvement with acid-free paper, the binding process has gotten cheaper, the glue usually thinner and less durable.

Unreadable after 50 years?

Whoever inherits my library is going to be screwed then.
