Guys, nearing the end of 2nd chrons, and I've just read something that didn't sit to well.

Findail.
He Did not look at Covenant or Linden, ignored Sunder's bunched and single-minded grief. Instead he addressed Vain for the first time since the appointed had joined the company

For the first time? Surely not. Not sure which "company" SRD is referring to but I recall Findail having a chinwag with Vain when he appears on Starfares Gem... 500-odd pages before the quote above. He definitely addresses him.

Findail appeared to expect no response. He shifted his attention to Vain. His tone tightened. 'To you I say, No.' He pointed rigidly at the centre of Vain's chest, and the muscles of his arm stood out like a whipcord. 'Whatever else you may do, or think to do, that I will not suffer. I am appointed to this task, but in the name of no duty will I bear that doom.'

From mind Findail has clearly "joined" the company on the dromond. And he clearly addresses Vain, so why does SRD make specific reference to it being the "first time"? An oversight? Or does he break the different groups that go through the chrons into different companies? i.e. everyone on the dromond are one company, and the group that have assembled to take on Lord Foul at the very last, another company? thoughts?

It means that it is the first time he has addressed him since the first time (which was, incidentally, when he first joined the company). It's all interpretation of the language used.

Thanks. The first bit's from some very wierd TV show (can't remember what its called, used to be on very late at night on ITV on weekends), the second bit's just a quote I found that I thought was quite funny.

Interesting post, fleshharrower, I shall have to read again (darn it ) and post my thoughts.

I hadn't thought of that before, Fleshharrower, Vain being quite the chatterbox. The two are always together, but I don't recall more than 3 times that Findail spoke to Vain, and only 1 where Vain answered. I'm afraid I don't have an answer.

I think Findail got more talkative towards Vain later on, though.

Yeah, murrin is right. It just means that he addressed him for the first time since addressing him on the ship.

Murrin. Nicely put. I concur, I saw the word "first" and immediately thought... no it isn't. That SRD refers to the time when Findail addressed Vain upon joining the company as the "since" makes complete sense. cheers

If that's what he meant, then it's a rather ambiguous way of saying it.

Alternitively it could be down to the fact that SRD is not infallible, and neither are his proof-readers. If any of you have read the first edition of The Gap Series, you may have noticed that Warden Dios reacted with appalled surprise when Marc Vestabule told him how Angus had sold 20 people to the Amnion and, only to react with eqaully appalled surprise twenty pages later when Vestabule told him the exact same revelation!

The gaffe was taken out of the later paperback editions, but it shows us that even the best writers make the occasional mistake.
