Favorite Sci-fi Flicks

Not a big sci-fi junkie myself, but there are a few near and dear to my heart. The positions on this list are highly interchangeable:
1) Blade Runner (my favorite atmosphere of any movie)
2) Aliens (love Alien, don't get me wrong, but I'm a bigger fan of combat films than gothic horror)
3) The Empire Strikes Back (saw this when I was around eight years old. Blew my mind and raised my expectations for Jedi to astronomic levels)
4) 2001: A Space Odyssey (so engrained in the culture that one hardly appreciates its freshness: a tight story drawn out by the genius of Kubrick's ambient cinematography)
5) Terminator 2: Judgment Day (saw this when I was six years old, I think. What a ride!)

1. Forbidden Planet.
2. The Time Machine (the 60s version).
3. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the 70s version).
4. Silent Running (for the beautiful ending).
5. Logan's Run
6. Gattaca

Uh...can you believe...I can't really think of any.

The Star Wars movies I guess.
Most of the ones I've even half-way enjoyed have been based on books. Guess I just prefer reading sci-fi to watching it.

The Thing rocks. The isolation, the horror! Even the sound track is creepy. That scene with the Spider-head deal....eep!

Yes indeed, some great choises, so I won't duplicate, but add:
Fifth Element
Plane of the Apes (still a good movie)
Star Trek: First Contact
Star Wars: A New Hope
THX 1138
Alien (the first one)
Slaughterhouse 5
That's a few new ones off the top of my head

I'm having trouble thinking of titles, heh, so for now it's just from what's been mentioned already, no particular order:
12 Monkeys
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Gattaca
The Fifth Element
Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Empire Strikes Back were okay too.
Is 28 Days Later sci-fi or just horror?
There are a few here I've not seen yet.

i liked 28 Days too, Murrin. i think the same question could be asked about the Alien films. it's a monster movie, no doubt.

Oooh, forgot all about those. I burnt out on the Matrix (kind of like with the original Star Wars).
I remember how big an impact the first viewing had on me, though. I actually sat up in my couch and went "Yeah!!" when Neo became the One and kicked Smith's butt. A pretty big feat for me back then, as I was 250+ pounds, heh.

Ouch! I am hitting myself for omitting Khan. It's my #4 sci-fi movie now, putting 2001 in #6 (
Terminator 2 keeps #5). Told you my list changes a lot!
As an aside: loved
First Contact, though don't think it reached the heights of Khan.

12 Monkey's definatley, one of my favourite films.
As for the rest, none really stick out as a favourite, although i liked quite a few of them.

The only ones that jump out from my memory are Pitch Black (Chronicles of Riddick was pants), Alien (I dislike the "more aliens = more scary" approach of Aliens), the Matrix (mind boggling at the time) and Serenity (though it's nowhere near as good as Firefly).
Haven't seen or read 2001.
