The NATIONAL SOCIETY OF FILM CRITICS opens Awards season by naming Forest Whitaker as Best Actor for The Last King Of Scotland. Smart move, folks.

(I haven't seen the movie, but that is one outstanding actor!)

Oh, and incidentally they also awarded:
Best Actress: Helen Mirren for The Queen
Best Supporting Actor: Mark Wahlberg for The Departed
Best Supporting Actress: Meryl Streep for The Devil Wears Prada and A Prairie Home Companion

I must see some of these movies.

Next! This is a quote from contactmusic.com
MARTIN SCORSESE's elusive Oscar dream looks closer to being realised after he was named Best Director by the Broadcast Film Critics Association last night (12JAN07). His gangster movie THE DEPARTED also picked up the Best Film prize at the 12th annual Critics Choice Awards. Receiving his gong, Scorsese joked, "I am pleased by this award and surprised. Maybe it's because this is the first picture I made with a plot." DAME HELEN MIRREN was named Best Actress for her role as British monarch QUEEN ELIZABETH II in THE QUEEN, while FOREST WHITAKER took the Best Actor prize for his portrayal of Ugandan dictator IDI AMIN in THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND. Movie musical DREAMGIRLS won four awards, including a Best Supporting Actor gong for EDDIE MURPHY and a Best Supporting Actress prize for JENNIFER HUDSON. Quirky family comedy LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE did equally well, picking up four gongs too. The prizes are decided by the 200-member Broadcast Film Critics group and are usually a good forecast for Academy Award wins.

Who could have imagined that Mark Wahlberg would one day receive acting recognition from critics alongside such heavyweights as Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep? He's become quite the accomplished actor.

However, I haven't seen The Departed. I think Scorsese is a great filmmaker, but the gangster genre just doesn't appeal to me right now.

Contactmusic.com reports the Golden Globe results. For my own pleasure I put in red the awards that pleased me.
MIRREN DOUBLES UP AS GLOBES CROWN HER QUEEN HELEN OF HOLLYWOOD

DAME HELEN MIRREN became THE QUEEN of Hollywood last night (15JAN07) when her royal roles earned her two big acting prizes at the 64th Golden Globe Awards.
