For a friend got a book question. The book's main character is a linguist and might be dead as part of the book's plot. Sorry this is so sketchy! The questioner is sure the answer is not Job.

Sci Fi/fantasy books with linguists:
Native Tongue Suzette Haden Elgin
Babel-17 Samuel Delany
BOX 9 Jack O'Connell
The Scar China Mieville
The Briar King Gregory King
This is what I can find immediately. Can you get any further details?

Babel-17 has a linguist who teams up with dead people. Not quite what you ask for, but maybe the details are jumbled.

Must add that to my TBR pile. (GF just read Dhalgren btw. Was not impressed.

(Dhalgren is an acquired taste. I read it about 5 times. I must ask about your GF's complaint sometime. Babel-17 is a mainstream sci-fi, won SRD the hugo or nebula I think.)

Haha, She'd just read the Einstein Intersection, so when I said I had a weird book by the same author, she was interested.
I tried to explain that it was experimental writing, and not best suited for such an early foray into the genre, but she insisted.
But I have hope...I've already gotten her to read the Chrons and the DT. She'll develop the appreciation one day. I hope.
(She had problems with the narrative...the way it didn't really end, and what exactly happened. She expects books to make sense by the time you getto the end.

She's more of a non-fiction reader.

Good for her! She must be firmly grounded in reality. Myself, I prefer to escape whenever possible.

I do however have a serious penchant for reference books, and anything related to mythology, poetry or literature. My non-fiction section comprises 2/3 of the entire collection.
