Question for Admins re spam registrations and phpBB3

When I joined up here, I noticed that there was a section of your profile that had to be left blank to prevent spam registrations (I call them "spamistrations").

My question is, is this effective or do some still get through? Because they're usually promoting dodgy, fraudulent, family-hostile sites and products, and/or drugs, they like to fill those sections in.

Also, I'm given to understand that phpBB3 will be released properly in about a month's time - it is currently still in beta. I've seen a test board running phpBB3 and there are some cool new features in it.

This whole "spamistration" issue has been an area of interest for me for some time, so I'm curious about this. I've had an idea that is being tested and so far it has killed the spamistration bots dead.

Comments? Thoughts? [s]Flames?[/s] <= you'd be able to define a tag to do strikethrough in phpBB3!

*shrug*

Seems to work well enough. Certainly spamistrations have been very minimal to almost non-existant since it was implemented.

I tried out phpBB3 on my computer a little while back, and I found the new admin panels a little confusing. There seemed to be a lot of menu redundancy, different sections linking to the same options pages, which made it seem like it could be easy to get lost in there if you're new to it. I also had a little trouble working out how all the new permissions stuff worked even at the basic level. (That's not to mention my dislike of the new cosmetic style of the board, but that's just a personal thing.)

(You know, just yesterday I was wishing we had strikethrough. It can be added very easily even in phpBB2.)

It seems to be working pretty well, from what I've seen. I can't recall the last time I've had to delete a bot.-jay
