US issues warning about spy coins!

No, this is a serious story. In 2004 the Canadian government issued a commemerative quarter in honour of Canada's war dead. It was the first coin to be issued with colour (the red poppy displayed prominently in the middle). US army contractors travelling in Canada filed confidential espionage accounts about them. They were worried and described the coin as "filled with something man-made that looked like nano-technology".
The confidential reports led to a sensational warning from the US Defence Security Service that mysterious coins with radio frequency transmitters were found
planted on US contractors with classified security clearance.
WTF?!
The "nano-technology" is actually a conventional protective coating the Royal Canadian Mint applied to prevent the poppy's red colour from rubbing off. 30 million were produced in 2004.
Well, it seems that the US intelligence community has
so much time on its hands that they are even suspecting Canadian quarters?! And that they were deliberately planted on US high security contractors?... by whom?... Amed, teh owner of the corner convenience store where they bought their smokes?...
NO offence intended my U.S. brothers, but is the U.S.
that paranoid that they suspect the Canadian government is spending that kind of money to spy on the U.S.?...
Sheesh, that would take away too much money from our valued (but flawed) health care system.
We hardly spy on each other, never mind a friendly country!

Really! I say find those responsible and imprison them for life on the Florida archipeligo-forcefeeding them margaritas and Coronas! (that they might have to undergo the occassional Jimmy Buffett song may be cruel and unusual punishment, however...)

Yes, unfortunately, it is.

I saw that story in the paper this morning, and it didn't surprise me one bit.
My commuter bus takes me to the Pentagon Metro stop every day. In order to get from the bus to the Metro, I have to walk past the Pentagon's front doors. You would not believe the number of armed guards they have posted on the route from the bus bays to the Metro station escalator. WTF, you say? Why, they're frightened that a suicide bomber will take Metro to the Pentagon. I am not kidding. This was a big topic of conversation amongst the Homeland Security people here after 9/11.
We're moving in a few weeks, and after that I won't have to commute through the Pentagon anymore. I can't tell you how happy I'll be when I no longer have to start my workday by walking past guys with AK-47s.
I'll stop now, before I'm told to take it to the Tank.

If you're walking past guys carrying AK-47s, they're terrorists. US troops carry M-16s or M-4s.

ROTFL!
Ever get lost in HumVees with the M-16s sticking out the window over and over again. Each time you think, "Are they gonna stop me next time I go by, or just shoot me?"

Wasn't this debunked, like, in January ?
The supposed nano-technology actually was a conventional protective coating the Royal Canadian Mint applied to prevent the poppy's red color from rubbing off. [

WASHINGTON: Reversing itself, the Defense Department now acknowledges that a U.S. government espionage report it produced warning about Canadian coins with tiny radio frequency transmitters hidden inside was not true.[

I'd be surprised if the US (or any country for that matter) has absolutely nothing to hide

and for those individuals who have nothing to hide, please post your Social Security numbers (or equivalent) here

thanks - you get the idea
There are things we all hide, and legitimately so.
As for WMD .... who knows?!?!!!?! Only Time
As for the US Government being paranoid .... well, can't say for sure as I'm not a US person .... but the one time I did go there I felt far more under some kind of oppression than anywhere else I've been to, including the PRC.
Maybe all governments are paranoid to a degree.
It's only paranoia when you THINK they're out to get you. Since they ARE out to get you, it's not paranoia and thus you're OK

Well it's obvious! It does sort of look like a speaker. But only someone from our beurocracy would think theyd put a visable speaker for spy use.
People need to think more James Bond.
