Me, by even possibly implying that I, or perhaps those whose company I share on this forum, would be offended by anything she's posted.

No no no, this thread is nothing about TRS. :D It's where we're planning the group read for the Gap books. :D

ok, then maybe i'll get myself some more Robert E. Howard and hold off on The Gap into Conflict until the group read begins;
maybe too find a new acronym for The Real Story.

So... how does a group read work, exactly? I kidna avoid them because my brain doesn't like it when I do things to make it work. But Lord knows I love me some Gap. Whatta I do?

well wadds...

you read. then you think about what you read. then you tell us what you thought! easy peasy!

now gap, as you know, is structured a little differently than Chrons so we'll have to work out who wants to be assigned what chapter and how we want to do the ancillary documentation portions. we might have chapter teams, or, since the chpts are titled by characters, we might have character teams or something. we'll figure that out before september.

now...bGb,

you don't REALLY have to stay a virgin till september. you can go ahead and read The Real Story if you want and i'd say, take notes as well about parts you particularly like or that resonate with you or something that strikes you about the story, getcher feet wet so to speak.

or you CAN wait if you want and read along with us, if you want. totally up to you.

at any rate, i'll probably read it again before september, just to figure out how we can structure the dissection.

plus, you guys can go to the dissecting the land forum and check out how the dissections have worked in the past!

wow!!! this is gonna be great!!

As Luci said, you're welcome to check out the Chronicles chapter reads to see how we did it (and survived). But, anyway, she gave you the clean, sanitized version of how it's done. But to get a better sense of the terror of it all, I present:

Doing Donaldson Dissections - The Real Story

1. Volunteer or be volunteered to summarize a chapter chosen by you or chosen by the group leader

2. Read your assigned chapter critically, take notes...or not

3. After your initial burst of enthusiasm, blink twice and shudder in cold panic as you realize what you've gotten yourself into

4. Go and do other actual fun stuff, while deluding yourself that it'll all come together by itself in your head when the time comes for you to actually write the damn thing

5. Blissfully ignore the first few tentative reminders from your group leader that your dissection is due shortly

6. As increasingly worried PM's from your group leader start piling in your inbox, avoid the Gap forum altogether while you desperately try to read the half-legible notes you had taken...or if you didn't take notes, re-read the chapter and write your dissection as you go, typing by the seat of your pants

7. Finally submit your dissection after the other Gap participants have given you up for dead - or just at one of Jenn's parties

8. Decide that you might just want to do another chapter, cuz all Watchers are masochistic to a degree

Interesting. Thanks for the break down, MM ;)

There may or may not be an ancillary documentation chapter that I may or may not be willing to do. It's my favoritest part in the whole series, but if we aren't doing it until 2008, I don't need to worry about it right now, right?

I'm going to go play outside.

Hear hear! :LOLS:

Anyway, my suggestion BgB, is read it now, then read it again when we get going.

(Oh, and for them as care, I read the chapter, then sit down and type my "dissection" referring back to the chapter as I go. (I usually do it the night before it's due.)

MM, that sounds a lot like my senior thesis paper. Except hopefully initial discussion posts aren't 10+ pages (I imagine this would make them longer than some of the chapters).
