Group Read of The Gap Cycle Announcement

Post by lucimay »

ladies and gentlemen,

Sorus and I are interested in beginning a group read and dissection of this most engaging of Donaldson's works, The Gap Cycle.

Thus jay, in the heh of it, has made us this forum in which to do so.

we would like to know who would be interested and when you would be interested.

we'll need a head count and a time frame to sort it out against new publications and dissections already in progress.

please join us in arranging this and post your thoughts, suggestions, and time tables here.

once we've got set numbers and bodies, thoughts and processes in order, we'll proceed.

Luci

Interest.

I've never tried to look very deeply into the GAP. It doesn't beg for it in the way the Chronicles do. I'm sure that I'm overlooking something important, so I'll give it a try.

There are so many Chapters; it will take a while...
I could see it getting a little confusing too; without chapter names.

It would awesome and everything, just mybe a little more difficult than the Chons that's all.

yes Drew, i know what you mean about the difficulty of chapter dissecting.

i looked over the books last night and i have some ideas about that but i'll save those until we see how many people are interested.

keep in mind there are 3 types of chapters in the Gap Cycle:

character POV chapters

actual numbered chapters

and ancillary documentation chapters

they are grouped so that you'll have one or more character POV's, one numbered chapter and one piece of ancillary documentation in most cases.
there are chapter groupings that have only two of the three types.

once we have enough people we can come up with ways of breaking it down and do a poll to see what everyone would prefer.

You could almost do it, like, a big group at a time--like Luci; you're doing the first three chapters, and AD of Chaos and Order...drew you're doing the Last three chapters of ...Gods Die.
Maybe that kind of thing.

Oh and I'm there...whenever...I may even buy my own copies of the books...even though Mr Donaldson told me in the GI that it's okay if I keep reading them from the library

I feel that, being a novella and as such having its own distinct, self-contained structure, The Real Story might suit a different approach to the chapter-by-chapter discussion. Can't think what that approach might be, though. Probably there isn't a way that would work better.

Count me in. ;)

I'll have to re-read some books, but that's alright.

I kinda like the idea of tearing through TRS to get to the Good Stuff - he goes over the important details again as they become more relevant. Set the stage and move on...

IMO, The Real Story is more-or-less a intro/summery of what is to come in the series. Kinda like an outsider's POV.

Sure, I'll do a chapter or two here or there. :D Nothing too hardcore though, 'cause I'm lazy. ;)

I'd be interested too. I'll have to actually get new copies of all the books except C&O.

The only thing I'm wondering is... as of Oct. 9 I bet most of us will have something else to keep us busy :)

right Relayer. as i said, we'd like to know how many people and who and when they'd like to do it.

so, everyone thats interested needs to give us some sort or time frame as to when you think you can read or your preference for a group read.

anyone who's expressed interest enough to post thus far, please make sure you tell us when this group read and dissection would be most convenient for you.

we'll work it all out we just need the info. see?

I'm interested, but I haven't read either the Gap OR participated in a Group Read, so I'll float on this one.

Is it possible to join later?

I'm trying to be a significant participant in the Runes group read. So it'd be nice if the Gap group read did not overlap.

But the Runes group read is scheduled to end when Fatal comes out. And you're not likely to get anything to happen for the while after Fatal comes out, as everyone will want to discuss all kinds of things Fatal. And, if the past is any indication, you may even have a lot of people avoiding Kevin's Watch until they read Fatal. (I know I had to drop out a for a month or so until I got to read it, too many spoilers.)

So, Luci, my recommendation is to start sometime in late 2008. :(
