*picks up jaw*

I need to beat the Protoss campaign. And maybe buy a new computer.

I've never played Starcraft, but this looks good. Possible purchase.

I know this is old, but....

I just watched some of the videos today. Awesome.

People on gfaqs are talking that carriers might be removed though. It's sad, because carriers are instant win.

Not really, but they're really an iconic Starcraft unit. Doesn't matter how bad they are.

*bumpski*

Blizz released the intro video for the Zerg a few days ago.

My RTS skills are notoriously poor, but the sight of that zergling rush makes me want to rush home and pick up Starcraft again. I should have time to finish it too, as sadly, Blizzard insist the game won't be shipped in 2007. Judging by how 'finished' the game looks, I can only assume they are doing an astounding level of playtesting and balancing.

That sounds about right. StarCraft is essentially chess with spacebugs, so I expect they'll make sure each unit has a strength/foil.

Aside from StarCraft's reputation, I don't think it's really impossible to make a sequel to it. Its gameplay is pretty straightforward--just another branch from older games, and it didn't have a lot of features (not even an "idle peasant" button); so Blizzard won't have to rack their brains thinking of what to add. As long as they capture the original spirit of the game (and that requires keeping the core gameplay, epic storyline, and memorable characters), then I don't think people will be disappointed.

The Zerg have been revealed. There are some great new units.

I can only hope online fee is free...because I'll be playing it no matter what.

Anyways, someone on gamefaqs posted up this shot from the alpha of SC1 (as a response to those who were bitching about the game). I thought it was kinda interesting so here it is:

Dunno why but it reminds me of Star Control.

Did they get a new voice actress for Kerrigan? Hrm, woulda been nice to hear the same familiar voice. Anyway, the game looks schmexy to me. Does anyone remember being disappointed by anything Blizzard has done? Not me.

Yeah, that alpha build was an entirely different game. They were intent on WarCraft in Space What ideas spurned them to make such a massive, dramatic improvement from that screenshot is staggering.

I think they will...she's done some other blizzard voices (I think one of hte rogues in diablo II, jaina in warcraft III) and she even writes books under the name "Sarah Kerrigan." I have no idea if they're good.

And in the meantime WCIII is also way different...man, heroes are just plain weird for me after starcraft, where they were mostly liabilities. I do like them but I don't really want the same thing for starcraft.

The development of StarCraft is a bit of a contentious issue. I think originally Blizzard were intending to make Warcraft in space, however they then entered into a deal with Games Workshop to produce a Warhammer 40k RTS and took the game in that direction. At the 11th hour, GW pulled out for reasons of their own and left Blizzard with an almost finished game featuring Space Marines, Eldar and Tyranids. They pressed on and reworked the races into the Humans, Protoss and Zerg that we've come to know and love/hate.

I think it's actually been to Blizzard and Starcraft's benefit that Games Workshop did pull out when they did. As much as I like the 40k universe, I can't imagine Starcraft being as timeless or widely distributed had it been based on it.

Makes sense. It does look awfully derivative of Warhammer, with a love for Aliens dashed in.

Don't forget a decent helping of Starship Troopers.

OH GOD ZERG RUSH *dies*

Yep, Zerg and Zergling rush were very nearly Tyranid and Termagant rush. I've known people use the term 'zerg' in conversation when they have no idea of its origin.

I just gotta say, I watched the announcement trailer to this game again for the first time after a year and MY GOD. Never felt chills like that before. Blizzard should make a freaking movie.

It helped that it was in HD and I had the lights off.

Fantastic video. Thank you for the link, the HD has so much more detail than the normal video feeds.

I've been waiting...

Many years ago an employee of Blockbuster recommended Dune II: The Battle for Arakis, I lost many nights sleep, was enthralled, and became an RTS fanatic ... forever.

Warcraft II was very good, fun, and solid, balanced...

Command & Conquer was good, but a little disappointing...

Then finally, pay dirt: C&C: Red Alert was awesome...

But then Total Annihilation came out, it's frenetic gameplay was exhilerating, tons of units and realistic physics, amazing sound...

Starcraft jumped onto the scene, and was just so balanced and fun and had a really good story and three unique and playable factions...

Empire Earth was amazing with many, many options on how to play, underrated IMO...

Homeworld was the greatest gaming experience I've ever had from story/feel/emotion perspective, and was so revolutionary with it's 3D game-play that, a decade later, not one game has truly attempted the feat...

Warcraft 3 was awesome, though a little overrated, but still had the most well done video game story I had ever played, and was the original insperation for what would become Dawn of War II...

Dawn of War was good, DoW: Dark Crusade was really good...

I'm now downloading a Company of Heroes demo...

Supreme Commander is good, but not quite greatness...

I have yet to play DoW2, but it's not an RTS, it's an RTT...

I've been waiting...

The perfect RTS has yet to be created. Many have tried, some have come close...all have failed.

Will Starcraft II finally achieve perfection?
