Not only did he earn 1,000 points in this nine week grading period, but he earned 2,500 for the year...



Here are the books he read and the quizzes he took to attain it this term. He refused to skip books in an author's bibliography that the AR site didn't have quizzes for, so there are at least five Asimov novels and collections (so far, he's still ony halfway through the fictional bibliography and he plans to keep going, even though his goal is now met) he wasn't able to quiz on.

In your opinion, what was wrong with it? In relation to that series (Running with the Demon, A Knight of the Word, and Angelfire East), I think that the new series starting with Armeggedon's Children will tie together Shannara and this other series.

Sorry, just my taste I guess...I love Running With the Demon, and was excited about the underground city, the Welsh connections and the whole "Knight" concept. I felt a little let down by the writting near the end of Knight of the Realm, but I felt Brooks really started to let things slide in Angelfire East...he could have done alot more with the storylines.

danlo, Beorn's sitting next to me reading your reply (I'm not ready to give up the laptop at the moment). He admits he doesn't get what you mean about the writing sliding, and since I haven't read any Brooks besides the Landover novels, I'm afraid I can't explain it to him.

Hopefully, as he enters high school next year, he'll begin to pick up on things like this. But, with his AS (yes, Beorn, most posters here know...), I am unsure if it's something he'll ever pick up on.

If the story is good and engaging enough, I'm often oblivious to it as well. I only started to complain about the WoT when he hit book 10. I'm a forgiving reader. (But I don't read Brooks. )

Well, I admit being annoyed in book 7, but nothing serious.

I don't know how to explain it Beorn but I'll try. I really get into characters, subplots, intrique and pacing. So much was becoming clearer about John, his bargain and the mythos. Enemies were pressing in. There all of a sudden we get this bizarre (and fairly dull) "Needful Things" type character showing up in the middle of nowhere at the beginning of Anglefire (and the 'hellfire and brimstone' stuff was way overdone). Though it is very scary and prophetic (ala Columbine and Va. Tech) the explanations for the sudden rise of all these serial murders isn't really there, initially. And John's apocaylptic nightmares are a bit too heavy and out of the blue. The pacing got jagged before halfway and I just thought that Brooks didn't care or understand about what he was writting about at the end. (lacking passion, in other words...).

I guess my beef with 'intrique' was that at times he trying to expalin too much and had trouble keeping history, flashback and prophesy in understandable order--he was working so hard trying to get these elements together that some of the deep-seeded mystery (which was great in most of the first two books) either became lost, or watered down.
