Anyone else have it?

I wanna get this. I LOVE music games, and this is one of the few that I haven't invested a heap of money to be able to play. I'm a fool for the Dance Dance Revolution though, and will buy Parappa in any incarnation and really want Lammy to have a sequel. And I've got the girlfriend into Karaoke Revolution, which I like, but my music tastes are so off the mainstream that I usually only know a few songs on them. But it's just too damn much to buy the guitar thingy right now though. I suspect some day I'll give it a whirl.

So tell me...is it similar to playing a guitar, but not really? Just like DDR is like dancing, but not really...

First, it is worth every penny you'd spend on it.

To answer your question... yes and no. The easy levels (which I JUST graduated from, but I have poor coordination and small hands) aren't like guitar-playing at all, because they're so easy. But when you get to expert, you're strumming every note of the song, and pressing the appropriate buttons, of which there are 5. So, yeah, it's similar. I mean, you're not going to be able to pick up a real guitar and play or anything once you've mastered the game, but... you still feel like a kick ass rock star

The levels go Easy- only using three of the five buttons, one at a time and it's pretty slow. Medium- using four of the five buttons and you start to use two at a time. Hard is using all 5, and more at once. Expert, like I said, is playing every guitar note of the song. It's insane. I'm still stumbling my way through medium.

Unfortunantly, no matter how hard you try, playing this game won't teach you how to play the guitar.

Love the comic. I really need to check that out more often, as I remember a clever Shadow of Colossus strip from them folks.

Yeah, I think I could definitely get into it. And maybe it will help build up calluses so it won't hurt as much once I start the real thing once again. I definitely got some of the feel from Um Jammer Lammy, so I think I'd like this even more. I just wonder where I'll put the damn guitar. Already got mics and dance pads and an Eyetoy....mutter mutter mutter

Doubt it. You're just pressing buttons. It's the roughness (and the sliding on) of the guitar strings that give you calluses.

BUT it could help coordinate your fingers I thought I was pretty well off before. I wasn't.

...seriously beginning to think Beorn's one "big" Hanukkah present should be Guitar Hero III for the Wii, with the wireless guitar...

I'm 38 and most of my friends are around the same age so take that as you will. It is kind of silly seeing a bunch of grown men sitting around a TV playing a plastic toy guitar and loving it!!!! But it does ROCK!!!!

I keep looking at Rock Band as an alternative. I haven't played either so do not know the pros and cons.

Rock Band is made by the people who made the original guitar hero. The Kit comes with a drum machine, a guitar controller, and a microphone. It can use up to two guitars, though, so friends make the game better (unless you can sing, drum, and strum at the same time.)

Up to four players play a song, one doing the drum section, two on guitar (lead/rythm or lead/bass, I believe), and one person sings to the song.

I was sold on it the moment I played the drums to 'Sufragette City' at Wal-Mart.

Guitar Hero is for up to 2 people.

Rock Band is for up to 4 people.

More People == More Alcohol Money == More Fun.

Y'know, I agree with this 100%. The first time I got drunk was with my parents. It was, of course, at my sister's wedding. On champagne. How I felt the next day certainly gave me caution with the stuff.

And the same on the cigarette front as well. Though I was a late bloomer on that.
